Today I removed the airtubes from my 1098 to get at the air filter. Last time I did this I knew that the rear lower bolt on the RH airtube was spinning as the brass insert in the plastic airbox was spinning. It didn’t matter too much as one can get to the filter by just removing one of the airtubes. Today I decided to sort this out so I drilled the head off the bolt and was able to take off both the tubes. Problem now is that I can’t now get the stub of the bolt out as the brass ferrule just spins in the plastic. I’m sure this is a common problem - anybody got any tips on how to stop the ferrule spinning so I can get the bolt out? Ta. R
I don't think you can clamp to stop revolving so only other option is to warm up and remove. Hopefully if temp low enough then it won't drag any plastic with it. I did similar recently and replaced with :- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M3-M4-M5...var=580036736220&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 these are different to O.E.M. Ducati in that the tangs are on a larger diameter so perfect to use as replacement on slightly damaged fitting - I slowly sunk mine home with a soldering iron.
On my previous 1098S, the same thing happened with the bolt holding the battery strap. Buggered if I could get it out, and I eventually sold the bike before I could solve the problem.
Thanks @Chris ...I will have another look and see what I can do with a soldering iron. The replacement inserts look good. Cheers.
Got the same problem with mine as I type. Two spun when taking air tubes off. One either side. Drilled heads off then held a soldering iron onto the end sticking out of the airbox till it was hot then just pulled it out of the plastic. Used a threaded top hat bonded from the inside with Sikaflex to sort both. Works a treat. Rich.
@Chris @Boggy Tried this afternoon with a soldering iron. Maybe I was being a bit too careful with the soldering iron but I couldn’t get the darn thing out. Didn’t want to completely muller the airbox so gave up and came in for a cuppa.
what wattage? - you need 100 watts plus - I say plus because i can't remember what mine is, will get back to you. If you don't have a hotter iron then I can pop over.
a short steel or st. steel caphead bolt would be good (copper would be perfect and would probably only need a 25 W iron) , screwed up to the shank ( I know this could be difficult, I shove matchsticks or shaved matchsticks into the void to stop insert turning) and then you could get some decent heat soak on it and also get an easy grip under the head when ready to pull it out.
