Wild camping in the Alps

  1. How practical / legal is wild camping in the Alpine countries. I am thinking more of the upper sections on Alpine Passes than valley bottoms.

  2. I would have thought it would be extremely cold on the high Alpine passes, that's what would put me off. I have always managed with a bit of cunning to find somewhere to pitch a tent when required, just have to be low profile!

  3. As far as I know except Switzerland you will be all good for one night at a time.

  4. Interesting thought. Guess if its only 1 night, by time you've pitched hardly think anyone will find you to move you on

Any big animals to worry about...and I do t mean those Germa Hells Angels who like puppies..

  5. Campervans heard up at the top of Alpine passes all summer long. It's like a wagon train grouping up for security, or sheep herding for warmth and comfort. Tents also do the same, it's just a bit more faffy. You will have no problem, winter will be f cold. Switzerland - never had a problem. Done it for 20 years or more.

  6. Thanks for the quick replies. I was thinking more in summer to get away from the heat of the valleys than in the winter months.

In the winter snowholing is the way to go

  7. No it isn't.............done that, got the frostbite.........

I summer you'll be fine. Don't forget mozzie nets.........

  8. It used to be the case in France that if you were in a designated national park you were ok as long as it was a one night stay and there wasn't a proper camp site nearby you could have used. The French are remarkably laid back about that kind of thing so as long as you don't take the piss it'd be fine. That means only putting the tent up in the evening and leaving relatively early so no stopping at 3pm and lighting a fire then getting on the beer
