Engine Health Check / Rebuild Advice

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Jimbob998, Mar 10, 2018.

  1. Can anyone recommend anywhere that could strip, check over and rebuild my 998 engine. Also keen to have the casings blasted to resolve the flaking / stained paintwork in the process? Its done 20k and the previous owner had issues with a damaged starter clutch in behind the flywheel, so whilst its out of the frame i want some piece of mind.

Had planned to have a crack myself, but by the time i price up the specialist tools and way up the risk of getting something wrong, it makes sense to understand what the professionals charge.

I am down in the depths of cornwall, so somewhere in the south preferred..

    Cheers, James

  2. My 998 had an engine repaint done at Louigi Moto about 10 years ago and it still looks good. The work was done along with a shed load of other stuff when the bike was owned by another forum member and I believe involved acid washing the cases before painting. The finish has held up really well. Maybe give LM a call and have a chat with them about cost and timescale, not too bad for you to get to up the M5 to Bristol area.

  3. I used Ducati John, but he is in Leeds. However I did make the trip from London and back to take my engine to him for a rebuild.

  4. James, if you decide to go with Ducati John or @nelly (cornerspeed and also highly recommended), give me a shout and I’ll pick it up from you and drop it off on my travels.

  6. +1 for Louigi Moto. Rich really knows his stuff and won't waste your cash unnecessarily. He let me do the donkeywork stripping down my ST4 engine in his workshop so I could save some cash. Top guys there :)

  8. Just to add to the above when i went to Ducati John he stripped the engine in front of me to give me an idea of what was needed, so there was no question of any unecessary parts.

I also did some phoning around before i went to him and he gave me the best quote and stuck by his estimate. The biggest part of the bill was in fact the rebuild parts which came to £900. That included new main bearings on both sides and also new big ends.

  9. Top man Ian as always
I’ll ring around the companies suggested in this thread and go from there.

Will have a phone around tomorrow.
I certainly like the sound of working with the company on the strip down.

  12. Where in Cornwall are you James? I'm over near Penzance.

Rich at LM is a top bloke and the closest you'll get by a mile - Bristol.

  13. I am in Saltash Max, so opposite end, but still not too far. Would be good to meet up some time once mine is no longer a box of bits...
    Thanks for advice on LM.

  14. A new place has opened at Dunkeswell, just north of Honiton.
I asked for a quote for a valve check and adjustment..
I was given a fixed price for the check and 35 pounds per hour after that.
What is a bit worrying though is that they said that adjusting closers is generally a head off job but I am assured by a highly reliable source on here that Testastretta motors have loads of access, so that's just not true.
