When Is A Van Not A Van?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by JimVee, Mar 22, 2018.

  1. Read the OP link and it’s nothing to do with DVLA classification, but HMRC trying to get tax back from employees/companies.

When the first tw8n cab pickups started c9m8ng out, loads had them as company cars as the bik was max £500 whereas a car of same value £7k. Then HMRC closed that loophole iirc.

Another wheeze was have it signwritten, as that became essential use then so £500. Removable magnetic signs started appearing for regional meetings ;)

  2. I got done going into Bournemouth a few years back....
    58mph in a 3.5t van on a dual carriageway....
There is a section 150' long where it goes under a bridge where there is no hard shoulder..... in a van* my speed limit is 50mph for that section.

I was aware (of the law), but not concentrating on this single aspect of the law while dealing with all the other issues that hit us every day.
Got all annoyed and went on Pepipoo.
Found that some girl died here a few years back, hit by a van, albeit the inquest found she didn't look and was distracted by her headphones and mobile phone conversation.
There is a huge number of prosecutions on this stretch of road every day... It's the law .... it's absolute and it helps the overall crime "clear up" records for Hampshire police.... HuzzaRH

    Yours.
    ... one sour puss.

    *see as described ad nauseum.

  3. It's right that the HMRC clear up this loop hole.
I've single operator plumber mates with 3 off T5's and T6's all FARKLE'd to death, DVD this, CCTV that, leather, Bentley wheels.... etc.... all billed through the company all to "out do" each divorced dad at the school pick up and the weekend jet ski at the beach.... pisses off Ex-wife as she can't touch the business money spent on assets and he's sticking two fingers up at her.

  4. No it isn't fella, maybe a car derived van ie corsavan, Astra etc but a van is 50 on single carriageway and 60 on duel carriageway 70 motorway...the amount of times hire vans come past me too fast as the drivers probably do not know.

  5. Yes agree, we sorted this earlier :) I was told by a copper chick too!

  6. Every cloud :)

  7. Did you do her?

  8. Yes, she was a girlfriend at the time  pillow talk o_O

  9. did she have six feet?
now stop speeding, its 50 on main roads round us, unless its motorway.
so basically, as we are heavy and dangerous we have to do 10mph slower everywhere, fair enough.
but on a motorway, where physics make us even more dangerous, we can do 70!!! what a crock of crap.
I cant even call on stephen hawking to back me up.

“What many businesses don’t realise is that the HMRC doesn’t count the commute – the drive between home and work – as private mileage, like they do with cars.

“This means that if a company van driver only uses the van for the commute and daily business, and they do not use it for personal use, they don’t actually have to pay van tax at all.

so if you have a van, 'you dont do private miles' DO YOU.

  10. After not before I hope :)

  11. During a fast bit

  12. Is now a good time to bring up HMRC's treatment of Jaffa Cakes and chocolate chip cookies with regard to VAT?
It would literally blow your mind.
Not sure I still have the guidance sheet and believe me, I haven't memorised the details so I am not sure where to find the data. Maybe Google will help.

  13. So I went into the local Ford dealer and he had a high spec Ford custom double cab that was a cancelled order.
170bhp auto Limited so I pick it up tomorrow. :)

  14. The famous 1991 Jaffa cakes case was reported as the appeal of United Biscuits (UK) Ltd (No 2) (LON/91/160) VATT Decision 6344. This decision settled the question definitively, and still stands today. Jaffa cakes are cakes - but not because United Biscuits choose to label them "cakes" - and therefore zero-rated.

  15. I wish I could dig up the VAT Office guidelines that resulted from this case.

It was a serious and official piece of guidance for use in VAT offices but it read like satire. It talked about toppings, chocolate in the mixture, chocolate chips, texture of food item, etc. Brilliant piece of work.
