Wanted, set of marchesini 5 spokes to replace my 3 spokes that are made from fat birds fed on concrete.
I've read in several places that the weight difference is minimal. The figures I have seen show the 5 spoke wheels are 2.25 lbs. lighter in the front and 1 lb. lighter in the rear. The five spoke look better imo but some here would say keep it original...
I swapped from three to five spoke wheels and noticed an immediate improvement , newer tyres could have influenced the improvement but still better. Steve
Standard 3spoke bare is 5.2kg F /5.8kg R 5 spoke Aluminium are 4.2kgF/5.4kgR 5 spoke Magnesium are 3kgF/3.9kg R Not mutch difference in the Aluminium wheels but even the small weight difference once rotating mass is taken into account makes a difference to the handling. But I'm after magnesium
My regular 5 spoke alloy ones are at the spray shop. I was shopping for my insurance renewal today and Hastings told me that if my wheels were magnesium they wouldn't insure me! Wouldn't matter as their quote was too high but I thought it was strange.
10 spoke Marchesini aluminium are only slightly heavier than the 5 spoke magnesium, whilst being stronger and not suffering from magnesium problems. Front: 3.4kg Rear: 4.5kg
My advice is keep looking everywhere, forums, ebay, gumtree. I managed to stumble onto a pair of 5 spoke mag whhels on gumtree late last year for £180, The guy was flogging off stuff he had in the shed for years (bike long gone) I tried to beat him down further but no joy.
Ye that's what I'm doing, I'm not in a rush to get some, only had the bike with the 3 spokes on 16 Yr so if it takes a few months looking it ain't gonna hurt.
