1200 DVT Surging

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by manxxl, Mar 7, 2018.

  1. Hi Everyone. This probably has been talked about before but a quick search came up with not a lot.took bike out today and the low speed surging seemed more prominent is there a resolution to the problem available ..exhaust valve is already disabled the rest is standard .
    Cheers

  2. How old is the bike and has it had all the available updates?

Just a thought, You could re-enable the ex valve to see if the ex valve elim is working correctly.

  3. Unless the exhaust valve is stuck closed, it won't be causing your problem. It only closes on startup, and when the bike is in neutral between 4k-6k rpm. Or at least, that's how my Canadian bike works.

  4. Hi.its 2015 model with 7200mls.
Had small amount of surging before but now it seems to be more prominent.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  5. Has anyone got any experience with boosterplugs on mutlys ??

  6. Can you describe in more detail what you mean by surging? When does it happen? What rev/speed? What gear? Constant throttle or opening throttle? Etc

  7. Hi Bradders, it on a constant throttle 40/50mph 3rd or 4th gear in flowing traffic hunting or surging not smooth

  8. Is this your first time out this year? How old is the fuel? What fuel did you last put in? The DVT does some funky stuff to prevent pre-detonation or 'pinking' caused by crappy fuel.

If you've already got the exhaust valve out-of-the-loop then the next thing I'd do is empty that tank and get yourself along to a different petrol station to the last one you bought fuel from.

  9. Yeah it was the first decent run and the tank was half full since probably Nov. I ran it low then filled with shell locally so havnt run it since Wednesday morning .

  10. Yeah, I'd get a couple of tanks through it with some fresh quality fuel and see how it runs after that, before looking too deeply. A half-full tank of fuel sitting around in cold weather for four months could have a fair bit of moisture accumulated in the tank. Even after a single re-fill, you can still end up with some residual moisture left over from the previous fuel.

Ideally you're better to completely drain the tank before refilling with fresh but that's not always as easy or as practical as it sounds.

  11. Ok Thanks for the info I'll hopefully get some mileage on it over the weekend.

  12. I had this problem with my 2017 dvt before i had the full termi & upmap done. It only happened in touring mode. Never happened in sport mode.

  13. Interesting. So is that around 4K revs? Could be where the emissions dip is on the bike? Have you got the latest map on the bike, mine has had one every time it’s been in (2015 reg bike been in about 6 times) and a couple of them have made a huge difference.

FWIW I find I find in sport it’s far more sensitive to very small throttle adjustments, where in others it’s smoother (although therefore has lag when you want to quickly get on)

    • Agree Agree x 1
  14. That's odd because I don't believe that there's a difference in the engine tune between the default touring and sports modes as they're both full-power engine modes, it's purely a tweak to the fly-by-wire throttle curve.

  15. That's not strictly true. In touring it's set at full power, soft throttle. On sport mode it's full power full aggressive throttle. Upmap gets rid of all that anyway.

  16. Out of interest I had precisely the same issue with my 2014 Pikes Peak (Skyhook version) from new, which was resolved with a software update.
My 1260 MTS with only 100 miles on the clock is demonstrating the identical traits, something I will allow to 'settle-in' and if necessary get rectified, probably with a revised mapping software update, at the 1st service.

  17. I believe around 45 and 70 is were the stock fuel mapping is the leanest around 14.5 which could be the cause of steady throttle surging...I would suggest riding 5mph faster :)

Here's my Enduro AFR run after removing the CAT for heat reasons.

Stock tune, ARROW link pipe, stock muffler.

  18. Boy I bet that’s loud !!

  19. Put expensive fuel in the bike!
