Ducati Dry Clutch Basket Wear

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by TonyG, Apr 15, 2018.

  1. Hi,

I would be grateful for some tech advice. I have a m1100s with a dry clutch. It has only done 10,000 miles but the clutch friction plates look worn out, but more woorying is that the basket also looks worn. It has wear grooves in it, they look worse than they feel if you run your finger over them. Is the basket knackered, and if so how much is an oem replacement or is it better to get a CNC Racing one?

    I've attached a picture.

    Thanks

  2. Photo doesn’t work.
Without even seeing it...yes, baskets wear so nothing unusual about finding it at 10k miles.

  3. Wouldn't worry about friction plates if clutch is working OK.

  4. You’d be better off posting a jpg rather than a pdf.

  5. Picture works for me and yes your basket is very worn. Looks like an aluminium basket so not unexpected at that mileage. There are a huge variety of after market replacement clutches out there for a variety of price points. All aluminium baskets will wear out with the metal tangs of the compression plates (and friction plates if they are a steel base) regardless and quality is a function of price. Designer names like CNC do not necessarily give you the quality for the designer price tag. You could also consider the 24 tooth basket as you will be buying plates as well. Some consider this quieter and longer lasting although I have never used one. My only advice to you would be to keep it simple and buy the best engineered you can afford. Andy

  6. The best basket available is the Barnet and probably the most expensive, it is an alloy drum with hardened stainless steel inserts to prevent wear. Unless you intend keeping the bike for a long time they're probably not worth the extra expense, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives.

  7. Thanks all,[IMG]

[IMG]It doesn't feel as bad as it looks if you run your finger over it.

Seems a bit excessive to have to replace the basket at 10,000 miles.

Clutch isn't slipping but friction plates do look worn.

  8. If your not having problems leave it alone for now. I've seen a lot worse baskets.

  9. Well, the only issue I noticed was it started to clunk when engaging 1st gear if it was hot, but was always easy to get neutral and didn't really notice it with ear plugs and a helmet on.

Now that I've seen the state of the friction plates I think I'll probably just replace them and leave it at that. Not sure of price for oem friction plates, but CNC ones are about £80 a set I think.

    Cheers

  10. I've got worse than that working fine on my Monster (and have had much worse before), I would however run a file down the inside edge - not the driving face that the plates butt up to, just to remove the burr that sticks out into the clutch as it might be catching the body of the plates.
