Could an inlet Vv be used as an Exhaust Vv??

  1. Howdo!

Are exhaust & inlet valves produced in the same manner? Or is there slight differences in manufacture?

Wondering if its viable to use a 42mm inlet valve as an oversized exhaust valve?

    Thanks for any info Pablo

  2. Hi Pab depends what the valve is made of
have a look through a catalogue you can turn valve heads down and shorten stems to spec

  3. Uhhhhh, depends on the engine, so I can only draw on my knowledge of the alfa Romeo quad cam busso V6 - the exhaust valves on that (and many other performance car engines) are sodium filled, as they are exposed to far higher temperatures than inlet valves, so in that instance they are different even without considering size. As to whether you could switch roles? Hmm, I see no actual reason why an exhaust couldn't work as an inlet (although not vice versa) but it would seem undesirable.

If an inlet were used as an exhaust valve on an engine such as the busso, I'd imagine there would be a high chance of dropping the valve as the stem would overheat and soften - the sodium is there for cooling.

  4. You might find the heads are a different shape, the inlets being thinner with a diiferent radius from the stem to the valve face

  5. Currently the heads have 40mm exhaust valves, there maybe enough room to fit 42mm, however I can't seem to find a direct replacement that's in price(As mentioned above would have to cross reference specs to see if there's an application in either a bike/car).

Found some 41mm valves but would it be worth the effort for 1mm?? Mmmmmmh.......the inlets are flowing well but the exhaust is quiet restrictive in comparison.

    Cheers Pablo
