Ducati 999 Help!

  1. Hi all

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me as I'm at my wits end with this bike now!
End of last summer it developed a problem where the engine management light would come on and bike would only run on 1 cylinder. I left it at that over winter while I got the fairings painted and new bits and bobs for the bike. I then found it could be the ignition coils as they seem to be a common problem with these bikes, so I've since changed both coils (3 Week wait from Ducati) today I thought id take it out and after 4 Miles the Management light came back on and running on 1 Cylinder again! When I hold left button and switch ignition on it shows EF1 code? it seems to be an intermittent problem as once left for a couple of minutes light will go off but as soon as you go over 3k Revs it comes back on again.
Does anyone else have any idea or had the same problem in the past? I'm trying to solve it myself before I send it into a garage.
    Thanks

  3. Post the error code shown below the EFI and some of our brighter chaps may be able to assist.

  4. Thanks for that, cant get the light on now to bring up and error code but I remember it saying 10.1 in the corner! its a brand new ignition coil so could it be the earth?

  5. 10.1 indicates Horizontal Coil shorted to power supply.

I defer to the experts who can explain this better than I ever could.

  6. Quick search suggests looking for and replacing the relay that is located behind the battery box. Daft place to hide it.

Relays are cheap and you should always have a few spares knocking about when you own a 749/999 : o )

  7. Thanks for Your Help Loz, I've got the code up and its 10.2 so its the Vertical ignition Coil the one under the tank, but that's new as well so maybe ill order some relays and try that.

  8. GL and let us know how that goes!

  9. Hmm, 10.2 indicates Horizontal coil shorted to earth, according to my list ...

    vertical is 11.1 and 11.2.

  10. Typo on my part there should re read before I post reply.

  11. Had the same on mine although the short was internal to the coil and was a result of moisture getting into the coil assembly after getting caught in a thunderstorm. I would check the wires to the coil plug behind the battery box, maybe pinched somewhere. Warning, getting the battery box in afterwards can be a challenge. While you are in there replace and relocate the ignition relay and wrap it with a waterproof cover like the finger from a rubber glove

  12. Try changing the coils over to see if the fault code moves to the opposite cylinder.

  13. 3DF8AB79-9D4C-4A7A-97DB-518D4EBFD609.jpeg I’ve now had time to investigate more into problem (had to leave it Sunday to get track bike ready for yesterday track day) have now found the connector that comes off wiring loom has a damaged wire! Started bike and only ran on one cylinder wiggled wire engine management light went off and it ran on both cylinders, problem I now have is that as it’s so close to connector do I cut off and put crimps on or is there a way of remaking off the connector?
