Morning Chaps Just removed my mate's 996 rear wheel to investigate wobbly drive pin on stub axle. Turns out two of the pins have sheared but were still held in place by last few threads of retaining bolts. My question is ... are they replacable? I ask 'coss I have so far failed to drift the remaining parts from the axle assembly and furthermore cannot see what stops the pins moving outwards (towards the bolts) in the first place. I'm wondering if the pins are actually part of the casting and the bolts merely for added strength. Any previous experience/knowledge much appreciated. Cheers and happy Easter to you all.
The 4 pins have shoulders on them which pulls up to the hub face which stops them pulling through. brian.
The pins are replaceable but if they've been banging around for a while the holes in the hub that they fit into may have ovalled - this happened to my 916 when it was new because the shop didn't tighten the wheelnut properly and it was moving backwards/forwards slightly, ending up ovalling the locating holes in the wheel and the drive pin holes in the hub. Bike had to have a new hub and wheel, fortunately it was done under warranty as it was their fault. As an aside, around a year later there was a recall for faulty hubs where they were supposed to x-ray them for damage but they replaced mine again as the shop didn't have the x-ray kit so were just swapping them. I think you'll probably want the hub/axle out to swap them though.
Hub's out and in the vice. I've stuck the screws back into the threads in the remaining part of the broken pins (the part that goes into the hub), leaving a mill or so proud, and given them a bit of a belting but nothing is shifting. Hence the question about whether they're removable. Now I know I'll hit 'em harder! Thank you gentlemen, much obliged.
Would imagine they were loctited in plus years of corrosion etc making them tight, mine fell out easily enough.
Thanks again for your help on Sunday Indiecourier. Phone call to Geoff at Baines Racing sorted four new drive pins along with fitting advice. Arrived in the post today! Hopefull the sun will be out on Sunday and so will my 996! Cheers!,
