Ducati 999 Unknown Wiring Issue

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by JoeNorthfield, Jun 13, 2018.

  1. Hi everyone.

Could someone who owns a 2005 Ducati 999 possibility help me out. I have noticed when I turn the ignition key to Park mode the side lights come on as they should, however when I then press the front brake lever in (still in park mode), the dash illuminates as well as the sound of injectors priming. Is this right? Now i’m pretty sure that the injector should in no way be connected to the brake lever. If someone could confirm if they have same would help me out a great deal, if not I’ve got to then pin point the problem.

    Thanks all.

  2. Whenever there are electrical gremlins on my 999 the usual suspect is the injector/coil/pump relay. It’s 2 quid part that causes no end of problems.

  3. Joe, is any of the wiring altered - do you have an LED rear light for example? Also do you mean the fuel pump is priming - as the injectors operate pretty much silently and just open and close?

  4. Hi, sorry yes the fuel pump. I have changed out the rear brake light to LED. I do need to source a good wiring diagram and have a look through it, it’s not obvious how this would affect it. It’s a good question though, I’ll try to remove it or put a bulb back in and see if it changes things.

    Thanks

  5. A poor earth can cause all sorts of weird problems

  6. Joe, it is feasible you have a back feed coming from the rear light cluster and energizing the violet/violet black wires on the main loom via the tail light supply when you apply the brake. This could be incorrect wiring, a bad or crossed earth or a failure of a component on the rear light cluster pcb. If my theory is correct you should also see a reaction if you use the horn with the ignition in the parking light position. I would recommend using the square water proof rear light cluster OEM plug which would make fault finding as easy as unplugging the light cluster. Each of the rear lights and indicators have a supply and common earth through that plug and it is susceptible to damage and corrosion if the plug is cut out.

  8. Fixed - Yes, the LED rear brake light I had installed was the issue. I had been riding with it in for some time and not noticed anything until I was playing around with the park mode, which I never use.

I found another LED tail light bulb that likely was a no error one and had resistors in it, which I replaced it with and the issue went away.

I suspect due to not enough resistance, an over current was causing the meter lights to come on, then passing through the front brake switch to energise the fuel pump relay. I didn’t hear the horn however.

Thanks for the advice, easy fix in the end Phew!
