Hi all, I have a 999 track bike and have been thinking of changing the sprocket sizing the hopefully increase acceleration. Can anyone offer any thoughts or advise on whether to bother or not, and if so what should I buy? Regards
I run 14R 39R (Renthal) makes a world of diffence Ideally you'd have a selection of sprockets for each track, but for me 14/39 works fine as an all round package for me.
I've always found it a good move. I usually go down one on the front or up two on the rear. I'm not bothered with top speed and have done this with most previous bike's and about to do same on my 1199. It can get a bit buzzy on motorways and the like, but I spend 95% of my time either on twisties or track so again not bothered. Brings power more within reach (relative to road speed) maybe not as crucial on twins but the Panigale doesn't have the usual V-twin mid range grunt :frown: So have to bring the mountain to Mohammad for license sake
If possible fit a larger rear sprocket, rather than a smaller front as this puts less strain on the chain. Especially important if you're 'downgrading' to a 520 chain - you don't want the chain snapping! Of course fitting a larger rear will usually require a longer chain and so is more expensive than simply switching a 15t front with a 14t, but if you're replacing the whole lot anyway then 3 up on the rear will give around the same change. Checkout Gearing Commander: Motorcycle Speed, RPM, Chain & Sprockets Calculator for a useful ratio calculator.
I had originally gone up 3t on the rear and to be honest never really noticed a great deal of difference. But combined with the 14t its a world away but without wanting to wheelie every time you look at the throttle.
got a 41 tooth back and it the best thing i did on the bike... and the cheapest.. slings my fat arse right out of the corners ... can't speak for 15 front ... grtz Koen
Indeed, which is why I used the quotation marks. It could be considered an upgrade with a view to weight reduction but a downgrade regarding strength and maintenance requirements - worthwhile on a race/track bike but personally I prefer a 525 for my (road) 916.
