996 Is It A 996s Or 916sps?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Dr.D, Jun 18, 2018.

  1. So I have recently added a new toy to my mini collection. A 2002 996S, the frame number is ZDMH100AA... which confirmed to me it is a 996S as well as having all the right bits etc. And my normal 996 is ZDMH200..... But.....
On the log book it states 916, and then when I rung up to insure it they said it is a 916SPS, engine cc 996..... which would be pretty exciting. But I said no it is 996S so they changed it for my insurance, and they didn't make 916SPS in 2002 to my knowledge.
How to I find out exactly what it is? Can ducati check for me?

  2. Sounds like your insurance company are total muppets to me and yes contact your local dealer or Ducati Uk and they will help:upyeah:916sps for the years 97/98 only

  3. Looks like 996s to me.

  4. That’s what I thought and what I bought it as. But log book says 916, insurance 916sps all frame engine numbers match log book, and the 916sps / 996s frame numbers are similar according to my limited research. I am wishful thinking 916sps I know it’s a 996S. Just need to get a monoposto seat unit for it now

  5. What does the engine no. say? i.e. ZDM916 or ZDM996, does it have P8 ECU with the second pickup on the left side casing?

  6. Engine no. Zdm996w4 not checked the p8 Ecu yet.

  7. Pm me the vin and engine numbers and I can check it for you. Doesn’t look like a SPS. Ecu wouldn’t fit under a be seat, even if the subframe had been swapped. Silver framed sps would be ohlins front end etc.

  8. It's a BIP so can't be an SPS - sounds like it's registered wrong

  9. I agree think it’s a registration error, but it did briefly make me excited the thought of it being a 916sps although still really happy with it, I wanted a 996S with it 50mm termis, ti sps engine bit and a bit rarer than the 996.

  10. 996s had ti rods as well.

  11. That’s open to debate. Some S did, some didn’t. Depends how much end of line it was.

  12. Did the “S” not had a ohlins rear shock?

    Henk!!!

  13. Post 2001 996 and 996S both had a ohlins shock. But the rest is up to debate on what they had knocking around ie engine titanium bits etc

  14. out of interest i have just looked up the invoice from the 1999 engine build on the 916 by the dealer,,,,Ducati pankl titanium rods £1150 plus the Vat:eek::eek::eek:
