Team Rt In The Twinshock Trailfinder

Discussion in 'Vintage' started by Monty, May 30, 2018.

  1. Wish me/us luck-or place your bets on what fails/breaks/falls off......
Myself and 3 mates are off to the Pyrenees next Tuesday to do the Twinshock Trailfinder on Thursday and Friday-3 X 450RT Desmo's and 1 500XT Yamaha-we must be nuts.......
We should fit right in to the event since Austin Vince who organises it is nuts as well.

  4. Certainly was fun-even allowing for several trails being closed because of the unseasonal amounts of rain that had fallen. My RT performed very well, Ken's developed an electrical fault that cut the ignition when he hit a bump-not at all useful on rocky trails....... Alan's still needs the timing and carburation sorting so it was popping and banging a lot. We were very uncompetitive in the event-but that's not why we went-good fun was had by all.

  5. As long as you had fun. That's all that matters. Is ken's still on points ?

Mine does a fair bit of popping and banging too. I think i probably need to rejet it though.

  6. Ken's is on an Electrex system-same as Alan's and mine.
We think the popping and banging could be caused by ignition being over advanced maybe-but equally it could be carburation. As a wise man said "90% of ignition problems are carburation, and 90% of carburation problems are ignition related......"

  7. OK, good to know. Mine is on electret too.

Would be interested to hear what jets your running. Mine is as per the 450 scrambler.
We had a mare initially getting it to run, and think it is a little advanced, as you say.

  8. I will collect mine back from Ken's tomorrow and intend to check the timing and strip the carb-will let you know how I get on.

  9. 130 main jet
    42 pilot jet
    65 choke jet
X8 needle-1 notch up from bottom
    30 slide
    268T atomiser.
My timing was also over advanced by about 4 degrees-of course now I have set the timing correctly the carburation is out.........
By the way I was sorry to hear of your Mutly problems, hope you can cure it without too much expenditure-it did sort of validate my decision to get rid of mine when I did....

  10. Thanks Monty.
Yeah, it sucks. Not stripped it yet, but it's fecked our remaining trips over the summer.

  11. Sorry to hear that John mate, how many miles did you have on it-from reading the replies on the thread it seems there is commonality to the failure.
I am selling my Cagiva Gran Canyon if you want a cheap bike to do a similar job for the summer-you can find it on Car and Classic.
