Using An Iphone For Maps On A Bike

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Justatad, Jul 29, 2018.

  1. Hi all, we have a trip planned to Ireland next week on my multistrada , I was thinking of using my iPhone maps app for directions, does anyone do this ? Are there brackets available etc?
    Any help greatly appreciated

  2. Download Waze, it’s free, has a motorcycle mode and (in my opinion) much better than anything else on the market. If you want to find some twisties just select the avoid motorway option, it will also give you a variety of routes that you can select.

The Quadlock case and mounting system is great. I use it for mountain biking and on my SuperDuke 1290.

For my recent 10 day Euro trip I was the navigator. I used Scenic for route planning and downloading pre-planned routes, and Waze for A to B navigation.

  3. I have a Quadlock on my Scrambler. Works well.

  4. I like the look of these. I have bar end mirrors, i wonder if the mount could be bolted into one of the original mirror female threads?

  5. Many people still buy dedicated GPS unit when most mobile phones are more powerful GPS receivers than the GPS units. The phone also has the advantage in that you can use whatever GPS software that you want.

  6. Works fine till it gets too hot - that was the only issue

  7. My iPhone 7 coped with 28 degrees, 10 hour days in the saddle. I don’t doubt Spain could cause some problems.

Biggest issue is battery life, USB power is a must.

  9. I use Google maps on an old iphone4 and a bluetooth headset which I picked up from ebay a few years ago for £28. Works faultlessly. I ride every year in India so leave my helmet fitted with the headset over there.
After years of getting helplessly lost, driven out of my mind with frustration asking the locals for direction, the ability to hear a calm soothing voice saying " after 200yards turn left at the Ashoka cinema and continue for 1/2 mile then turn right onto Ma hat mer gandi road" is just wonderful when you are leaving a big city in the madness of Indian traffic.
No good in the hot sun though, I keep the phone in my pocket and have a long lead to plug into my usb charger outlet.

  10. We have 31c here today but Friday is forecast to be 39c. I will still have my phone in my tank bag connected to the bike USB and will have no problems as it never has before.

  11. Thanks for the commmets , much appreciated
How do I power my iPhone from the usb socket on the bike ? Apologies for such a dumb question

  12. Look under the pillion seat and you’ll see a USB port

  13. Ok but mine turned its self off in the tank had attached to a usb charger every day last week - thankfully we had a tomtom rider or would have been knackered

  14. Thanks el toro
Is there another USB port at the front of the bike ? Not sure a charge lead would reach from a handlebar mount to under the pillion seat

  15. You can buy USB extension leads in all lengths. I have wired an extra one into my Supersport rather than use the ones under the seat.

  16. Or use a portable power booster in the tank bag next to your phone.

  17. No there isn’t. Either use a long lead or carry a power pack around (as I do) to recharge it when necessary.

  18. I’ve got the quadlock system on my road bike ( cycle ) & the dash mount in the car.
ET, have you figured out a way of using it on your panigale?
I have a telfirizer ram mount for conventional GPS, but love Waze ( good for Police presence - friendly guy , like to say hi to them).

  19. One of my friends fitted the Quadlock to his Panigale. Let me see if I can find the pic he sent.
