959 Suddenly Sounding Rough

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Gweev, Aug 7, 2018.

  1. So rode my 959 to Thruxton for bsb ylon Sunday but when I went to ride home the bike felt different. The engine seemed louder and the exhaust more harsh and it was lumpy at constant throttle.

Any ideas on what's wrong? It was fine riding up there.

    Cheers,
    Mark

  2. i guess visually check the exhaust for cracks /broken spring will be a good start ?

  3. Forget ear plugs? LOL

Did you fill up before? Bad fuel maybe? Normally if exhaust valve you get a MIL light

  4. Nothing obvious with the lower fairings on. I'll take them off tonight and check.

The bike has only done 1,300 miles. Are cracked pipes a thing on the 959 then?

  5. Nope, filled up the day before. Thruxton is only 40 miles from me.

  6. They are on the bigger bikes, rear header pipe iirc

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Are you sure nothing was nicked from your bike whilst you were watching the racing ? It won’t be the first time that’s happened. Andy

  8..

    Nothing looks missing....

  9. Have had a mirror and some Ti calliper bolts nicked from Thruxton before. And some other bolts from Brands. It’s why I won’t go unless I can park inside.

  10. Ive heard tales of full exhaust systems going walkies from Brands BSB before. Have you still got your end cans lol?

  12. F@#k, youre joking??
Would that be covered by warranty though?

  13. Should be covered.

@Nelson should know cracked piston symptons

  14. Unless you did something to cause it (and how could you?!!) must be covered

Have you started/ridden since? Is it only over a certain revs?

  15. I started it yesterday.

It seems to idle a bit higher than before, say 1800 rpm. Harshness seems to be there at idle but obviously more noticeable when revved.

  16. Pissed and broke????

  17. Blow-by from breather? smoke from one exhaust, Only cracked pistons I have seen have usually got a valve head stuck in them?

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  18. How do I check for this? Sorry I'm not very mechanically clued up!

  19. 1098 were rife for cracked pistons

  20. Could 1800be because it was cold on choke? Sounds very high.
