748 748 Not Selecting Gear?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Chris.King1, Aug 15, 2018.

  1. Ok on my sps, when I select 1st gear, I can still roll the bike and unable to ride it at the mo. It was stood for a while in the previous owners collection. So, clutch slave, push rod/nut seized, plates not biting? Any ideas...have got a new slave to put on and will be ordering whole new plates, basket, hub, etc

  2. unusual for clutch to seize in the disengaged position, you are sure it's in gear? Pop the clutch cover off (unless it already has an 'open' type cover) and then watch pressure plate for movement when you operate clutch lever.

  3. yeh, need to make sure its in gear...as it seems too smooth selecting first, normally you get a bit if a clunk. It may not be selecting gear, as when I go one up, 2nd, it still does the same as in you can still roll the bike with no resistance. Luckily going into my local garage for new chain, sprockets, slave, etc.

  4. There is an excentric adjuster inside the alternator side cover. Sometimes the screw comes loose and they go out of adjustment

Unless of course it is actually selecting gear? Are you sure?

  5. no, I don't think it is actually selecting any gear, as I can push the bike in any gear. I still get the neutral light, but the gear change pedal seems way to smooth when selecting first...for a Ducati!

  6. Ah then first place I’d start is with the adjusting lever inside the left hand side case

  7. Have you disturbed the external gear change linkage ? Check the boss on the spindle isn't fouling the outer case .

  8. cheers, will start of with those ideas and work my way through when I have time.

  9. Just tried, seems its 1st gear. Got it into 1st, then change up and back down to 1st, but neutral light stays on and can not role the bike. Shift up and back down and actually get 1st and can't role, so it is in gear. Seems 1st is a bit hit and miss.

  10. It sounds exactly as the selector adjuster this vid shows it

  11. Thanks

  12. have you got any feedback from the last owner? When he laid it up was everything working okay in the clutch and gearchange department? Before you go dismantling and adjusting, if possible I would get engine running if it’s possible (ignoring the neutral light for now) just to confirm that you can’t select first/second/neutral.

  13. Oh I thought you had had it running! Yes try all the basics before the tools come out!

  14. I had similar issue, was the slave, put on the oberon

  15. As Chris suggests, it's normal for a bike that's been sitting to have the plates seized together so the clutch won't disengage and it takes a determined prod to get the bike into gear with an almighty clonk as the plates free up. If the plates are badly seized and the motor stalls when firmly put onto gear, they may have to be separated by hand.

  16. Cheers, well can get all gears now, but when I put in 1st and release clutch it just creeps a foot...think the plates are knackered, pushrod fully works, plates moving in and out. Anyhow, get the new slave on first, and will be putting on a new basket, drum, plates, etc for good measure.

  17. I also noticed the collers on the pressure plate sit quite far out, so much so, that the previous owner has had to use 3 washers on each clutch protector bolts as they would rub against it. However, the springs are not loose. Whatever stack height is in there!

  18. All sorted...replaced with the Oberon and noticed the clutch lever needed slightly backing off...runs like a champ. Thanks for all the advice.
