Front Axle Nut 748

  1. Just checking the front axle nut is 28mm?

Bought a new socket for it, didn't fit, hammered it on and it did.

Found out why, there was a crack in the nut allowing it to expand when torqued, fits ok off the axle.

Nut is really light, soft and non magnetic (aluminium)?

Obviously I've ordered a new one from Ducati, but I take it this POS is not OEM standard?

A real example why you should be wary of alloy in some applications!

  2. An alloy nut is STANDARD. No need to hammer on if the socket is the correct size. 28mm is correct, but even an adjustable spanner will do to undo one is all else fails. Maybe you have an odd nut of something else?

  3. The nut was cracked which was expanding it, hence hammering (lightly) the socket on. The nut fits in the socket fine when not on the axle.

So what you are saying is the new nut will be alloy too, oh well!

  4. The nut was fitted too tight - they probably got the torque value wrong!

The nut is only supposed to draw the axle through to the right position, and then the fork pinch bolts hold everything in place.
If the nut is tightened too much it will split - it saves wrecking the thread on your much more expensive axle and forks!

  5. Doesn't need the same Cave Troll torquing like the rear...

  6. I think its 65Nm, which is still too much for that nuts construction in my opinion.
