Refreshing A Monster 696.

  1. Bars finally arrived, they are rather wide though. Is this common, do they come oversize and you cut them down to suit?

  2. Struggling to get images working :-/

Anyway, not much time to work on the bike this or next week. But original levers and bars now off.

    I miss my monster

  4. Bars measured, cut, filed and on.

  6. Header bolts have always upset me with how corroded they are, so plenty of Plus Gas on today for removal tomorrow. Will put titanium on instead, and the bike will never see wet roads again.

  7. Still struggling with images.

I got two hours today so madeca start on the overall cleaning of the engine, frame, etc. It’s clean anyway but I wanted to cover it in WD40 and toothbrush it. After two hours I’d used all my spare brushes and needed a break. A solid hour was spent de gunning around the front sprocket. I’m not finished, nowhere near it, but here it is now:

I’ve ordered new sprocket retainer bolts. Next job is to let the WD40 soak some more then go over it all again.

Axle grease arrived so the front wheel can go back on. A new headlight will be going on, delaying the bar rebuild for a while.

  8. Front wheel is back on (was waiting for grease). Forks are being serviced when it gets it MOT so can stay on for now. Callipers on, love the paint pen to check for loose bolts :)

Was looking at the banjo bolts and thinking I can’t clean them so maybe I’ll replace them.

  9. Then decided to put the Brembo stuff on. And this settled it, lines aren’t long enough so new ones ordered.

  10. They look pretty damn good to me

  11. New lines coming.

Grabbed an hour today to take off, clean, and put back the left rearset. Clutch cable removed ready for the new one to go on.

  12. Still struggling with photos!

  13. I normally hit the enter bar to create space in the text box to put the pics in, then simply drag and drop the pics into the same reply box

Brakes bled, new Brembo 19RCS is lovely. Front wheel back on. Started to clean the innards, need to buy more WD40 :)

  15. I love this thread. Compared to my 748 your Monster was/is pristine but fair play to you for doing this refurb/update.

Re the pictures, they might be a bit big - file size wise. It takes an age (relatively) for the thread and pictures to load so I presume the same applies but mores so on your upload. I just checked the file size of one and it's 3mb. It might make it easier if you reduce the size of them to make them more manageable. Just a suggestion.

  16. Good idea. I’m using ImgBB I’ll see what I can do.

  17. New panels on the way, going to a local specialist for paint. 10 month wait! But his work is immense, hopefully he’ll fit me in earlier.

Apart from a new carbon front mudguard and new light, I’m done with everything north of my chin. Next steps is see what needs doing from my balls to my chin.

  18. A body wax?;)
