996 Crank And Rods Into 916 Engine - Do They Fit?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by FatAlan, Sep 20, 2018.

  1. Hi all. I need new connecting rod bearings for my S4 and I have seen a used 996 crank and rods for less than the cost of a set of bearings and bolts.

Can the 996 crank and rods be put into the cases and still attach to the 916 pistons or is the gudgeon pin size different or the rods really different?

    Cheers,

    Alan

  4. Very limited fitments looking at the above...

  5. More than likely not, or at least straight forward. Type of alternator etc. 2 and 3 phase gennies have different rotor mountings. But the piston deck dimensions will mean possibly having to machine cyLenders or shimming them to get a proper squish measurement. Moving the cylinders can create problems with timing belt tension etc. It’s doable, as are a lot of things, but there’s a lot to consider and work round.
What shells do you need? Rod bolts aren’t a great deal unless they’re Ti.

  6. I was going to go with a set of blues. The crank I was going to buy has been sold so I am out of the running on that one anyway.

I think I was trying to save a little and not do the job properly there. The generator differences are problematic too. Because I was putting the crank into S4 cases with an S4 loom I am definitely better to stick with what I have. I did look at a 944 conversion using the 904/ST2 crank but the idea of going to single phase made me think the slight increase probably isn't worth the drama.

I guess I'm going with stock crank and rods. Mine look okay so it is probably best to go with new bearings and put it back together. It was taken apart to change a crank bearing (generator side) and I noticed a small amount of up and down rock on the rods while it was apart.

Just making a straightforward job difficult if I do anything but stock and put it back together again.

If you have recommendations for where to get the bearings and rod bolts, I'm, all ears! I was going to order them from Germany.

  7. Agreed. Fitting the crank is the easy bit, but making everything else fit and work is the issue. PM me the details of the bike/year and i'll see if I can sort you a "subscriber" deal out ;)
