Hi all, changing cans on my Sport Classic to Keihans Keihan Systems, They very helpful guy there owns the SC 1000s you see on the web landing page, His bike has Keihans (obviously) but he told me he didn't alter the ECU at all. He said apart from the occasional 'pop' it all works well....so my question is... Will not adjusting the Ecu have any bad mechanical long term affects? I suppose fuel consumption and maybe top end will suffer slightly??? Thanks
I've run mine for four years with no discernable problems, I do get the occaisional pop but nothing that bothers me too much. The standard ecu should cope fine with the change and unless your after more power or a different throttle response I see no need to mess with it.
i always check the colour of my spark plugs, that gives a good indication, if the engine is running learn or rich. i think Ducati's do run a little on the rich side as standard.
I believe some people have combined both the Keihans & the Staintune cans with either the 02 manipulator or they have had the standard ECU reflashed for best effects. The Termi kit came with a dedicated Ducati Performance ECU and a modified airbox lid. You may also need to adjust the Throttle Position Sensor to achieve best running. I have the Termi kit & the bike runs really smoothly with no pops or bangs on the over run. No reason why you shouldn't be able to have similar smooth running with the Keihans. There are a number of places that can reflash the ECU, I think Neil at Cornerspeed can do this, but I'm not sure which service centres in the south of England can do this.
I put a termi on my 749s and thought it would be ok , but after a rolling road test today I found out its running dangerously lean and in need of ecu work to fix it. So power commander and custom map here we come!
Thanks HugH! I'll have to keep a careful eye on the plugs (maybe take photos now and compare in 100 - 300 miles time?)
The plugs give a poor indication on a fuel injected bike For instance the map values at low throttle can be lean at low rpm and rich at higher rpm. Then rich at mid throttle but lean at mid throttle high RPM. Wide open throttle can be rich at low rpms and lean at high rpms There is no set pattern to where its rich or lean. Straightening out the fuel tables via mapping is the key to a responsive and safe engine. The plugs give no indication because they go through a variety of conditions on one twist or should i say roll on of the throttle. Therefore the plug colour is an average of all running conditions. An example . I tuned an st3 a few days ago that we ported and added open pipes to. The bike was dangerously lean at peak torque conditions but was stinking rich at idle. The plugs were black
