Hi folks. Fiddling with my 2000 996 BP. Not had this long. Sprockets on it are 14 front and 36 rear. So this is just 1 down on the front from standard. Sprocket sizes/changes have always confused me !!! I know,, it's not " sprocket science " lol. Guessing the tooth drop on the front is for better acceleration. Is this ok left with the standard rear ?? All advice/thoughts/suggestions appreciated. Steady road rider. Never track. Cheers folks.
One off the front is somewhere in the region of three on the back.... It will accelerate faster with the loss of a tiny bit at the top end, but it will be fine. Have a play on here Gearing Commander: Motorcycle Speed, RPM, Chain & Sprockets Calculator
Cheers, a bit better acceleration sounds fine. Slight loss of top end !! Sounds even better lol. I'm getting old don't you know : )
One off the front is pretty much one of the first and best mods for little money you can make, yes it accelerates quicker but it's far better around town when you're hovering around the 30mph mark I found I was jumping up and down between 2nd and 3rd until I'd dropped the front sprocket a tooth.
Ally, the accepted lore is to up the rear sprocket and chain length rather than use a 14t on the 996 front (it costs a lot more however), although 14t is probably perfectly ok for normal road use if you maintain the chain properly. The recommendation for your bike is a 38 or 40 rear A good article here from Shazaam Gearing Options - Ducati Up North
am i to understand from this that the best setup for a standard 996 is 15/43 compared to the originally fitted 15/36 ,mine is a road bike, so track setting dont concern me, ta kev
For my mind Kev, 15/43 is more track gearing than road. It'll work fine but can make the ride a bit too "busy". 15/39 is a good medium ground. It's the same as dropping a 14T on the front with a stock rear. I run 15/39 on my 748/853 for road and for track drop a 14 on, giving the the higher gearing for hooning around. Saves having to swap the chain out.
