Project Advice

  1. By the time Mark Dent had finished the rebuild on my engine, I was in at over 4k. Doesnt take long, depending on what you do.
As above, OEM gaskets are a must and Japanese bearings. Pistons not so much of an issue, I used Wossner pistons and rings in mine. I'd doubt if you need pistons though on that mileage. Biggest concerns will be the cranks as they sit open to atmosphere, the disc liners, crank seals.. Mark will strip and rebuild the motor for about 700 labour, then you have parts on top of course

  2. Thanks for the replies. I was seeking information more on a collector's view of using non-OEM engine parts rather than an engineer's view. After 30 years development some non-OEM parts/materials are likely preferable these days.

I have decided I am not rich enough to use the bike in the manner I did before putting it into storage (plus the roads have got a zillion more cars and cameras!). I am going to prepare it for sale and replace it with something more like an RGV250 to play around with and drop without causing too much (financial) pain.

I have also decided to take the prudent option and strip and inspect the engine without trying to get it running. I have recently moved to the Derby/Nottingham/Leicester area and would prefer to deal with a local engineering firm to avoid posting and build personal contact for future projects. Mark Dent seems to be located in Surrey which is too far. Any suggestions?

  3. Sometimes a clean original un molested bike needing work is more appreciated than an updated one. Join the rg forum, post plenty of pics as is and then get some valuations.

This should then give you a sliding scale of your inputs versus return.

  4. Strangely I had an email this morning from facebook saying my account had been unblocked. This made little sense because I always could login with my old userid and password but then not get past the extra identity required page because I was offered no way to do it! The email contained links to login and so it may well have been phishing for my details and not from facebook. Whatever, it prompted me to try to login again but this time from my mobile phone rather than my computer and this time I was offered the option to confirm my identity via a number texted to my phone. I had to repeat it 3 times before the identity required page went away so things are still not quite right but it worked in the end. So if this identity required nonsense happens to you try to login with your phone and not your computer and you might be able to get it to work.

My concern about advertising the bike in it's present form is that I have no way to prove it was running nicely when it went into storage. Perhaps it won't matter too much given the prudent way forward would be to strip and recondition the engine. It is something to think about.
