I am aware that there may be an issue with heated grips. Mine ( 2012 Multistrada), throttle side recently stopped working, clutch side warms up initially and then cuts out. I’ve replaced the battery, which was getting a bit tired, to eliminate a low voltage problem. Is it replacement grips or is there anything else I should be looking at? Thanks in advance for any input.
Someone will be along shortly to help you but I have read a lot about grips failure. Some even fit different makes to overcome this. My multi 2017 8000 miles with lots of use on heated grips have had no problems so far.
If your OE heated grips have lasted this long, you have been fortunate. Your choices are to replace with OE which are not expensive but a ball ache to fit properly. The connectors are bunched in the wiring loom beneath the front of the petrol tank which for the first change needs to come off. In the past I have heard of people just cutting the wires relatively close to the grip and soldering new joints, or get yourself a set of Oxford heated grips and hard wire them to the battery. I fitted Oxford heated grips to the girlfriend’s Diavel 3 years ago and so far they have been reliable. Andy
As the tank needs to come off to replace the fuel sender, ideal time to do the OE heated grips. If you have a good relationship with your local dealer, you might just get the fuel sender done as good will which will get you the sender foc but you pay the labour. All depends on which revision sender you have. I believe anything prior to E is covered by a technical note. Andy
Ducati heated grips are neat. Seam to have very limited life expectancy though. Mine failed around 18 months on a 2013....
Mine have lasted 3 years and 10k miles on my Scrambler so far on the Multistrada 2 years 11k miles still going strong. I think Oxford are better but there is a mile or wiring to deal with
Hey Robot, I have the same issue with a bike of similar age (2013 MST 1200s GT that's done 18k miles) and I also hoped that by replacing a tired battery (I was also having starting problems) that it might re-enable the heated grips to function again but unfortunately not, although I still get the dashboard indications saying that their on; they just don't get hot or even warm anymore! Have you found a solution? Like you I expect, I'm now exploring options for fitting non-OEM Heated grips and the Oxford Tourers would appear to be the obvious way to go but I would really like to utilise the existing system power supply and switchgear/functions. Any ideas anybody? MTIA
Not been back yet for further investigation. After market grips are an option, although I’m not sure of compatibility with existing controlling. And personally, I’m not a fan of alternative switch gear.
Had quite a few Mutley and yes the grips fail, replaced with same on each and every occasion. I think hot is just way too hot....IMHO.
Some owners have fitted aftermarket grips but used the OEM wiring retaining control through the switchgear.
Had issues with the heated grips on my 2013 hyperstrada, 1st fail was the throttle grip, I removed the rubber grip, found the burnt out part of the heated element and repaired it with some very delicate soldering, lasted another 12 months, before failing again (found a member on another forum selling a hardly used one in good nick for not too much money so fitted that. Then the left one failed, I found a new left only R&G one for sale for £10. I checked the resistance and it was the same so fitted that two years ago and works perfectly, only downside is the grip is different to the R/H one, but not bothered, just wired it into the OEM wiring. I know other folk have fitted after market heated grips onto Ducati's and they still operate from the same switch. ie oxford heated grips will work on different heat settings from the factory starter switch.
