V4 Thinking Of Cancelling My V4s

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by JoePeps, Feb 1, 2019.

  1. If you're in a position where you can walk away without financial loss then I'd do just that, walk

Panigale V4's are not going anywhere, and let's all be frank, it's not a new thing that 'gen 1' bikes, especially those based on a completely new engine, end up being the ones to avoid.

It isn't right, and it's also not intended to slate anyone's current purchase, but unfortunately history would suggest that gen 1s occasionally tend to be a bit rushed and less polished in terms of QC.

One thing you can bet money on is that Ducati will roll out a gen 2 towards the back end of 2019 and the marketing spin will be how it's an 'evolution'.....when the reality means it's just been simply fixed

  2. You'll come round... ;)

TBH doesn't sound like you really know what you want, just want something now. So why not buy something used that you won't take a bath on, do your track day commitments and take some time to enjoy the buying process rather than doing it all in a hurry. :)

(or keep your S1000RR - a perfectly formidable bike that you're used to riding and will presumably enjoy very much)

  3. 1 reason i never buy a gen 1 bike wait for ducati to sort out all the niggles first then a year or 2 the gen 2 will be out meanwhile for your track time shimmy can rent you a v4s for your euro trip nothing to worry about just turn up then look for a bike when your back

  4. fuc just bought a v4 hope I don't regret it

  5. Gen 1 things are usually the valuable ones over time... "the original" and all that tosh. In terms of product, outgoing models have all the kinks ironed out.

  6. You're kind of right, I'm impatient and want stuff straight away!
I test rode an 1199S and loved it, wanted to buy one but then the new RR was released and it seemed like a complete bargain for what you get. Then the release date was pushed back and I wanted a new bike for my Spain trip, and decided to push the boat out and spend more than I intended on (to me) the ultimate bike.

I plan to keep whatever I buy for about 3 years so depreciation would be spread a little, and I don't mind my hobby costing me a few quid as it's worth it, as much about the experience as it is going fast.

I have been enjoying it and up to now accepted things may need tweaking, but electrical gremlins really do put me off more than anything and I don't want it to be a constant return trip to my dealers. I'm planning on using the bike hard on track so reliability is key.

What's the chances of them giving me an extended warranty over and above the 2 years they come with?

  7. Are Ducatis any more expensive to run on track these days as to the jap stuff ??

  8. Not so sure about the running costs (I run an extrioptions 899) but anything you buy for a Ducati is more expensive than its Jap equivalent.

  9. @JoePeps a friend of a friend is selling an absolute minter for trade in money... v4s low mileage. Has been faultless..

  10. I think they are. They’re also more expensive to smash up

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  11. Recalls aside, this bike sounds like a lemon, so I'd walk even if there was a financial cost (lost deposit).

  12. Definitely more expensive to smash up

  13. No brainer, get your money back and walk away. Plenty of others to choice from.

  14. JHP will sort any issues however if its their bike, even if its used on track.

  15. If they have changed the headers and swapped over the original Lambda sensors, sounds more like an issue with the latter. Maybe a wire was broken or they were damaged when refitted. The headers are a hardware issue, so their being replaced for new ones, would not in itself cause a problem. Sounds as if the dealer is not particularly au-fait with the bike. As for the other recalls, the oil cooler has caused a major headache in terms of the logistics of swapping out all those affected bikes units for new ones and the demand that has placed on their supply chain. It is gradually being addressed and many owners have already had theirs changed. The clutch hose is a smaller bore than the original fitted and the aim is to increase the pressure supplied to the slave cylinder to mitigate problems. The torque of the swingarm pinch bolts has been reduced from 25NM down to 20NM to alleviate pressure on the eccentric hub and load on the bearings and the cam chain tensioner bolts are merely torque checked to 30NM. All pretty straightforward work, so if your bike is still exhibiting issues, bearing in mind the mechanical nature of the above recalls, I would argue they have either messed something up or there is an unrelated software problem. Personally I would give them a few more days to liaise with the factory and if they cannot resolve the problem then put forward your reservations about buying what might be a lemon and cancel the order OR ask them to provide you with another V4 of the same specification or maybe a low mileage higher spec example with an extended warranty thrown in as part of the deal. If they are a reputable dealer I don't suppose they would be too willing to lose your business so you do have some room for negotiation here, before you throw your toys out the pram with them.

  16. I was worried about mine needing the headers but I called up the dealership today to check as I’d probably have to leave the bike with them rather than go up and wait for the service and other outstanding recalls to be done.

What about an R1M as an alternative?, they’re pretty reliable, or keep the S1000RR and get an RS250!, I’m going to get mine running and out of storage this year and don’t know if it’s weird but I’m actually looking more forward to riding that than my Panigale at the moment :D.

  17. Agree with Topolino.. The header swap, as well as the other jobs, are all mechanical. O2 sensors and exhaust valve are the only fault generators that get disturbed. Can't be much amiss...

  18. Rang them up earlier and they were spot on with me. Basically no-one is too sure what the problem is and a few parts have been changed but hasn't solved it.
Mutual agreement to pull out but no arguments had, so hopefully I'll still be buying a bike from them in the future!

So for now I'll get my S1000RR prepped back ready for Spain and then start looking properly after I get back and see what takes my fancy.

Completely gutted but I think it's the right thing.

The wait for a shiny red thing continues :(

  20. 190k, wow, I'm interested. Would it take much MORE money to fit that box of bits and the race kit that it should already have fitted if you want to rev it over 6,500 rpm. Maybe a shithot race team to fettle it. Then PB magazine can get it to go 3/4 of a second quicker than a 10 year old FireBlunt.... Where do I sign!
