Ducati 916 No Spark Alarm Removed Step By Step Test??

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by vinnychoff, May 24, 2018.

  1. It is one area I have not tried as I have a OBD reader but have not tried to check the components. I could not get the OBD reader working. I have a friend who has software and a laptop. I will have to try and get that on the bike. Or I have to go through the devices and check again each one with a multi meter.
I am currently reading the factory manual to see what I should be checking.

  2. Thanks to Bootsam for helping out....today we took the crank position sensors from my bike and put them on his 916 which fired up....next stage is to take my coils off and go back to the engine builder (Paul G). I am running out of checks to see what is wrong.
    ECu checked and worked okay
Relays faulty, replaced but no change in starting.
CpS sensors both the old one and the new one both work.
Bootsam bike removed the fuses to the alarm and back brake. Removed from mine but bike started so this is not connected to mine..
Just about to take the coils off and try them on Bootsam 916.

Any ideas? or checks I should carry out? on other components? Timing?

  3. Can't help thinking this is going to be a wiring/connection problem and when you look back it will be "so simple".
But on the positive side you will be a hell of a lot more educated than when you started.

  4. We had one here recently where there was no continuity between the ignition/fuel pump relay output to the ecu, everything was working but the wire to the ecu was bust or the connector crimp in the relay plug was dodgy. It would have been spotted with a continuity check between the relay plug on pin(s) 87 and the corresponding pin on the ecu connector or a bridging test wire between the two points. As Hugh has just said it will probably be a facepalm moment when you discover it. Good luck

  5. I have not read all posts so may miss some things .....

When you switch bike on does fuel pump relay click in for a few seconds then back off ( fuel pump purge ) ?
This function comes from ecm ...ecm drops an earth on fuel pump relay in readiness for start
I’m talking more cars but if purge works I would say ecm has its powers and grounds .

With ignition switched on if crank sensor is ac inductive if you wave a metal object past crank sensor tip does main system or fuel pump relay run ?

You say you get 10 volts at coils positive terminal when cranked over .....so your using a volt meter ....do that test with say a 21 watt bulb and do it cranking ...let’s see what amps we have behind that supply .

With a bulb type test light ( not led Types ) if you put crocodile clip on a battery positive and dip on coils negative and crank over does the light pulse ....it may be dim because of switching duration .

Can someone put up the wiring diagram so I can study it .

Are coil drivers in ecm or does it have external power stage..... ( ignition amplifier )

  6. not sure on this.

    Lee thanks in advance Vinny

  7. Hi all, thought I would update you with the latest and if the weather is good have another go tomorrow. I am planning to check the output from the engine and more investigation on the wiring loom.
Thanks again to Bootsam who let me put my coils on his bike last weekend. It started which means all the components are good from my bike,
    coils
    crank position sensor
    ECU
relays replaced, original ones gave up over time.

I have started to look at the wiring diagram and using a meter check continuity between the connections. I am planning to check more tomorrow. Working through the loom slowly.
I did find a connector which had 4 pins extend the headlight to the cutout switch. All the wires were black which led me to think that this was a alarm addition. Out of 4 wires only 3 were connected which made me think this was it. Removed it, tried for a spark but no success.

So now i only think there is possibly two things
    the engine possibly?
    the wiring loom connections?

well maybe 3. In time as the relays which originally worked, something could fail in the meantime as the more it stands. The more I think some thing else could fail.

thanks for your help and suggestions and it would be so nice to hear it fire up.

  8. Hi all, hopefully you all have a flavor of how long this has been. I have lost quite a lot of hair....trying to think why the bike would not start. The last post had in right.....one of two things..the engine or the wiring.

Thanks to Bootsam for saving the day. He had a Ducati alternator tool and a electric air impact wrench.

The mechanic who built my engine did not use the original parts. He supplied timing gears and put them on.....for a P8 model. This explains why every test I carried out did not find anything wrong. The bike was cutting out just before the crank bearings failed which led me to the alarm which was removed. The alarm board had a burn mark so failed a couple of times.
I have owned the bike for over 10 years and bought it with 12k on the clock. It currently stands at 52k on the clock. I have a blog on wordpress following the bike and will write a little note with this one. The original engine is back in the bike that had about 6k so should last me a little longer. Though I am wondering about selling it. From memory the only failure has been the relays from the bike sitting around.

Thanks for Paul G for owning up to fitting the wrong timing gear and turning up to rectify the fault.

Its in the process of being put together and of course thanks to all of you for helping out.

  10. So my previous thoughts about the crank sensor being the problem was right - but for the wrong reason. Glad to hear you've got to the bottom of it.
