Do You Grease Your Nuts ??

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Carbon749, Mar 10, 2019.

  1. Hi,

I've had the front and back wheels out of the Diavel for new tyres and proper spring clean.

So, do I use grease on the front and rear wheel nuts when I put the wheels back in? There does seem to be grease on the treads already.

    Just checking.

  2. Or just lube the shaft?

  4. Thread and wheel tube as well as your nuts should be lightly smeared with a general purpose moly disulphide grease like Castrol MS3. It is common for any steel screw/thread to be lightly lubricated when being torqued into/on an alloy component as the thread can bind and shear or the torque setting is not reliable if there is bare steel to alloy contact. Thread locking compounds also lube the thread where the thread is not greased

  5. :cool:I always grease my nuts before threading them in. Still seize up half way through though.

  6. I have a 2015 workshop manual (for a Monster 821) and the grease that is recommended by Ducati for this is Shell Retinax HDX2.
(as I am not going to do bike maintenance myself, this type of grease is all I need)
Apparently it is no longer available and is now replaced by Shell Gadus S2 V 220 AD 2, I just bought it today.

When removing the wheel shaft first you remove the right side nut, as the left side nut is supposed to be glued to the shaft with Loctite 601.

  7. My shaft was seized in after only 18 months of use, I always grease it when it’s out now.
