748 Safe To Start After 6 Months With No Use?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Pidge1969, Mar 14, 2019.

  1. Hello my 748 has been in storage for 6 months and I haven’t started it in this time. Is it safe to start it after this long as I’ve heard the belts may have become a bit mishapen due to
it been not started. Any advice please?
    Thanks

  2. Its fine. If you were riding it before then charge the battery up and go for it.

If in doubt ride it round to your local dealer and get the belts inspected but they should be fine if they’ve been changed recently. 6 months wont hurt it. :)

  7. Yeah it will be fine, do the usual checks on water, oil tyres, etc

  8. Mine sat for 6 years :(. Fitted a new battery, whipped off the valve covers, put a little oil in there, pressed the button and wayhaaayyyy :). After 6 months you probably won't have to put any oil at the top of the engine. Go for it.

Needless to say I had to do a lot more work after that, but she started and ran.

  9. Yep, start it, just let it idle for a while to move the belts around and let them warm up as with the rest of the engine.

  10. Start and let idle at approx 1400 rpm for around 90 seconds is what you want to do - after charging the battery :upyeah:

  11. Advisable to get the oil pressure up (so the light goes off) before letting it fire up ? In a week or 2 when I start mine after it's winter lay-up I will prob take the plugs out of mine to spin it up before firing it up properly.

  12. +1 that, I remove the plugs & turn the engine over till I get oil pressure after a long lay off.
