That's my main concern, I have heard stories....but has this ever actually happened...yet. I prefer the trumpet sock style, which is what I have, as its so much easier to access. Not worried about any loss in power, as if I wanted power I wouldn't be riding a 748SPS. I only do 300 miles year on her. But will admit I'm constantly crapping it that my nuts are going to get very hot oneday. I once emailed Pipercross and their response was it is impossible for it to catch fire as it is pre-oiled and the pre-oil will dampen it and they have never had any reported bikes going up in flames. Much like if you ever try to throw a fag butt into oil, it will extinguish and not go up. I do have some red Pipercross filters for the airtubes, but they are race tubes which do not split in half, however they have the provision inside for the oem set up. But need to get the plastic mount they attach to.
Not want I want to hear!...Im going Pipercross, oem style in the air runners. Their filters are cheap enough, better than oem and I only ride 200-300 mile year on the sps. Each winter I always clean filters anyway, regardless of mileage. Think that's the best compromise.
