hey chums, fitted a bucci slipper to my 749 a few weeks back... took it for a spin last week and when releasing the clutch on take off, it was making quite a loud noise... kinda like a rusty, warped rear disc would. (its not the rear disc) took it for a bit longer spin today and its still doing it although if I let the clutch out really slow before giving gas (almost to the point of stalling it) I can pull away with no noise.. just... other than that its great! selects gears fine, in fact its the smoothest clutch of all my bikes, finds neutral and runs through the box at a standstill no prob.. no slipping (apart from when its supposed to!) . any ideas? there was a washer/spacer that came with it that I could not work out where it should go and couldn't see it on drawing on the bucci web site.. will find it in a min and put pic up..
My stm slipper always did the same, particularly on an uphill start giving it a bit more throttle. Steve
that's tomorrows plan funnily enough!!! I think it needs "bedding in" even though its a second hand unit... just hope that if something is amiss I don't damage anything...
Okay, the Bucci style of clutch is well known for making graunching noises on launch. This can be mitigated by building the clutch pack with at least 1 but more normally 2, 1.5mm dished plain steel plates. What does your clutch pack comprise, plate wise and what overall thickness ? Andy
think it was 8 steels 7 fibers... it measured 37 ish mm (battery had gone on my callipers) I must admit the plates were all cable tied together so I installed them in the order they were in without paying attention to any dished plates (been told in the past the where they are in the stack doesn't matter?) but obviously I alternated steel/fiber as they were packed.. started with 2 steels I think....
Shouldn't you start with a friction first, it's a few years since mine was on but I seem to remember if a steel went on first it could drop off the drum. Steve
hmmmm…. perhaps I have misinterpreted the instuctions? it was a second hand set and I looked at a lot of stuff online before convincing myself I had it sorted... will whip it apart in the morn and double check what I have done... would have thought if I had the whole stack in reverse it wouldn't be working (despite the noise) as well as it is...
When the slipper works the drum moves up the ramps leaving a gap behind it, a steel first would drop off, that's if my memory is correct. Steve
couldn't wait... have just pulled apart.. 8 fibers 8 steels.. fiber first (against drum) stack measures just shy of 37 mm..
this doesn't telly with the bucci spec ive been looking at... road being 15 plates in total (2 steels at the top) and race being 18... unless previous owner has mixed plates to get correct stack height? but bucci shows to steels at top of stack.. I have one...
im still thinking unless the noise is something to be concerned about I run it as I had it set up as it works grand
Chiz, race friction plates use a sintered material and road friction plates use an organic material. Race friction plates are half the thickness of road plates which is why there are more of them. You have my phone number, give me a ring tomorrow at a reasonable hour and I can talk it through with you. Andy
My Sigma slipper that was in my old Superduke r was exactly like you mention, Very noisy, Not had that problem with both my DP clutches, Ive always thought it to be the friction plate type
