V4 American V4r Restricted

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by mutt1979, Mar 26, 2019.

  1. I had heard rumours the V4R would be restricted in the US due to emissions etc. A video circulating Facebook shows a V4R on the dyno only making 200 rwbhp. Whats clear in the video though is the full Akra is already installed on the bike. That translates to a far cry from the 230 bhp Ducati have been pushing.

Members group page only so apologies if this video isn't available to all, it's the only source I can find at the moment

  2. The claimed 234bhp with ‘race kit’ isn’t rear wheel horsepower to start with and dynos are notorious for being inaccurate. That said, having seen a V4S measure 206 rwhp in standard spec (Ducati claimed 214bhp) on a dyno in the UK, 200 rwhp does seem low. My only other question is where did the V4R come from ? I’ve not seen one in the public domain yet. Andy

  3. Just checked on the Ducati US web site and they are still claiming 234bhp with the Akrapovic exhaust so looks like the answer to your question is no. Andy

  4. Isn’t US and UK bhp measured differently. SonUs lower number is higher U.K. number

  5. The video is from 650ib that has just claimed his V4R. They made the the dyno test with 31 miles on the clock. In the video it is said that this is one of the reasons why it is making power as his previous Speciale(with the Akra exhaust) made 199RwBHP on the same dyno with 5.000 miles on it and in different conditions.

  6. what's interesting is that it made 197HP for 2 runs and then 201HP for a run, but it didn't seem gear dependant (as some like MV's definately have a increased output in higher gears). Even so a 4HP difference was a bit weird.

Maybe it will loosen up with more miles and read more like 205HP on that particular Dyno, perhaps it's a low reading Dyno, who knows...

I don't think if you buy a V4R you care about the exact HP, you surely know you have 'enough' everywhere...

  7. Mmm, I’m not quite sure how to react to that video. Would I complete several dyno runs on a bike that has virtually just been uncrated ? That will be an emphatic no from me. Hey, ho, each to their own. Andy

  8. I did state rwbhp to differentiate from Ducati's claimed 230 bhp which i assumed is crank. However, with losses, you would still expect 215 - 220 ish bhp at the rear no?

Another assumption may be that the exhaust was installed and they haven't added the up map, but then why bother with a dyno run?

  9. also probably running on lower octane unleaded.

  10. Having an American lard arse on the bike will restrict its potential too :p

  11. I saw that. Doesn't exactly muller the V4 does it? And the V4 will have a slightly fatter torque due to it's 5mm longer penis, err stroke I mean :)

  12. wow dyno run at 31 miles!
I'm naturally taking mine steady running it in!
The official line in the manual states 5.5-6k for 600 miles then no more than 7k up to 1500 miles. This seems a bit overkill on the v4r with it's 16.5k redline!?
I took it steady for 600 miles on my old s then started opening it up properly gradually over the next couple of hundred miles after it had it's 1st service.

  13. I ran my V4S in with a couple of steady track days. One being the Ducati day at Donington last year. Not exactly to the book you might say. I've tried it before (running a bike in properly) and got bored after about 35 seconds.... I don't know how people can be so restrained

  14. WTF since when is 199rwbhp not enough? I bet 95% of the track day riders (myslef included) don't dare to go 100% throttle past the apex let's say at 11k rpm in full race mode setup.
Again bhp is just a figure at near top rpm's...no point discussing top power when exiting corner at 7000rpm (how many bhp at that rpm?)
199rwbhp must be around 215+ at the crank? (removing all the other factors ie chain, gearbox, camshaft, electrics, water pump)

  15. It's not about what is required, you've paid £35k for a machine quoted to have 234 bhp only to find it's not

  16. It's not restricted - it's just a reasonably accurate dyno (for a change) and a tight engine. The Speciale with full akra doing 199 would be about right (they are about 189/190 stock on a non MCN style lol dyno). With a few miles on it the bike could gain 5-10 extra putting it in range of 7-12 more than a v4S which is bang on what they claim at the crank.

Ian Hutchinson did a 130mph lap on the TT on a superstock 2010 Blade (probably 170hp) so pissing about like you need 230 is quite amusing. It was a claimed engine figure so anybody that expected the exact figure at the wheel really isn't getting it! The 1199's 195bhp ended up at around 172 at the wheel. It's not exactly new

  17. I understand and agree with you, however 234bhp is crank not rwbhp...and that is not an official dyno measurment.

  18. What a sissy! Of course we do!

  19. Maybe I'm just expecting too much? But I was hoping that it would equate to around 210 real world horsepower? And thats being generous allowing for a 24 bhp loss in transmission!

I'm not saying I personally need more. Back to the original question I was wondering if there's more to the story and if it's purposely choked back?

  20. Well, than maybe you should join Alvaro Bautista, Chaz Davies is clearly struggling on the v4 sbk machine :):)
