Starter Kill Switch Wiring

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by wotbus@, May 5, 2019.

  1. I have an old throttle assembly ('81 Darmah) together with the cable which connects the starter/kill switch to the loom (3pin male).

Unfortunately the cable is separate from the switch. The 900SD wiring diagram the indicates the colours don't match up and the number of wires within the outer is different too

Diagram shows: Y, O and OW (yellow, orange and orange/white) with another unmarked wire from starter button to kill switch.
Cable has: Y, 2 x W on the central pin and O (yellow, two white and orange).

So, 4 wires from a 3pin socket to 4 connections = each side of starter button and two on kill switch.
Problem is what goes where

  2. I presume the wires are detached from the switch and need soldering back on again?
White will be +12v in from the ignition switch (orange white on the loom connector). At the switch one white wire will go to the kill switch the other to the starter button.
The orange wire should be the kill switch output connecting to the orange wire of the loom connector and hence to the ignition modules and coils.
The remaining yellow wire will connect to the yellow wire of the loom and on to the starter solenoid.
That's how I see it anyway.

  3. Yes, detached and now needs re-soldering. Thanks for your help :upyeah::)

  4. AH, how do I know which connection is which on the kill switch or doesn't it matter. (just means engine runs when kill sw in the stop position and vice versa) ?

  5. It shouldn't matter and will make no difference to the on/off positions.

  6. Brilliant, thanks. In my box of bits I came across another lead; this one with 3 wires - Yellow/Green - Orange - Orange/White.
Could you help with that one ?
    # these cables are preparation for further checking/elimination of the starting problem I have with my Darmah on another thread which I now believe to be electrical somewhere.

  7. I would reckon on:
Orange/White to one terminal of the kill switch. Since there are only 3 wires this will need to be linked to one of the starter switch terminals as shown in the circuit diagram. At the conector it should go to the Orange/White wire of the loom.
Orange to the other kill switch terminal and to the Orange in the loom connector.
Yellow/Green between the other starter switch terminal and the yellow wire of the loom connector.

    Hope that helps :)

  8. OK and thanks again for your help :)
