1299 Oil Change

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by NBB, May 6, 2019.

  1. changing the oil today on the 1299 and came across some large metal particles on the sump plug.

There were approx 4 of the size in the pic with the largest measuring 8mm in length and 1mm across.

Bike has done 4K miles and been serviced according to schedule. Last service completed at 1782 miles at Ducati Leeds.

I’ve not had a magnetic sump plug before, so I’m not sure of what’s normal. But these do seem large to me.

    Should I be worried?

  2. I would say not all looks pretty normal to me but you could always check again after a few hundred miles

  3. I'd email ducati leeds with the pics and ask them should you be worried ? If nothing else you will have a concern and reply in writing for future reference.

  4. No way should you be getting metal particles that big !

If you have 4 pieces like that, it almost looks like a needle roller bearing cage is breaking up?
Have you still got the old filter you took out?
If so, cut it in half with a hacksaw and look for more fragments.

A normal mag drain plug should just have some metallic “fuzz” on it, think small iron filings, the piece in your picture is part of something that has broken off a manufactured part, if that makes sense?
I’d be straight onto your dealer with those pics,
    Good luck

  5. Hey Fella
Had similar from my 1299 around 10,000 miles interim oil change after track day.
Reported to Ducati. Apparently it is most very likely to be swarf from the machining during manufacture...internal edges from cutting that don’t get cleaned off..? Mmm.
The smaller squarish plastic looking peice is a peg from the casting process.
I was doing my peices when I found them. Further I was present at the bikes 15,000 miles service (done at 14,200) carried out by PG Performance and specifically checked the drained oil. Good news was no more swarf found..which was nice!!
Log the findings with your dealer just in case.
    Cheers
    TC

  6. Yes as above this is normal.

  7. It’s not swarf,

    Couple of reasons,

It’s too straight, swarf clippings curl as they are machined from the casting.

And secondly and most importantly, swarf is aluminium , not steel and would not stick to a magnetic drain plug.

  8. I'd dig a bit deeper. Drop the filter too and have a little rummage... It's probably ok but best to check. Any missed gears or clunky ham fisted down shifts??

  9. No manufactures leave swarf in the engines nowdays, this is not 1970. CNC machining and clean factories is how it is. Ducati would not leave this stuff in an engine be assembled due to the sheer cost that it would be to right this problem a year or less later, it would be financial suicide if they did!!
It clearly has come from something and further inspection is my advice, you should take the parts to someone who can magnify them to see what they are .Cutting open the oil filter is good advice also.

  10. While adding a Rapidbike evo, I’d finished installing it and started it up. Whilst it was warming up my mate lent on the gear lever by accident and it slammed into gear but other than that, no.

  11. Cut filter open and nothing untoward in there.

  12. Nah, nowhere near enough mechanical violence to cause any problems there....

I'd say you're ok then. There would have been clues in the filter if there were anything serious going on :):upyeah:

  13. This is standard certainly on new Ducatis. I have pictures of most of my oil changes on the two 1199S and Pani R and you'd be shocked by how much of this is on the magnetic sump plug and I've never had an engine issue in 25,000km of use (conveniently ignoring my clutch basket exploding...). I got it checked by the dealer and Ducati and they said its normal. My BMW was not so bad but it was on there as well.

It's worth mentioning that both engines were strong and noticeably stronger after another 500km strong track use and couple more oil changes on top of the run in miles compared to several softly rode bikes I've tried. The sump plug cleaned up after a couple of changes but there's always a bit there.

  14. Just to be absolutly at peace in my mind, I took a trip over to Ducati John in Leeds, who then took one look at them, said Panigale, I said yes and he said, nothing to worry about.

As I'd also found these (see pic) when sifting through the drain pan. I needed someone to look at them and John said he'd seen them on every oil change he'd done on a Panigale.
