Crankshaft Locking, Desmoquatro And Testastretta Engines?

  1. I am interested in the various methods used by forum members to lock the crankshaft of 748/749/916/996/998s engines to 'service' the flywheel nut. Having tried and failed to adjust a worn and sticking selector drum control fork (the bike is getting stuck in gear) a new arm and spring is on its way from MR for less than £25 and I need to take the flywheel off.
What are the simple ways of safely locking the crank which does not stress gears/teeth and can be safely employed without a second person to assist?

  2. This type of thing.

It may have been a bad batch, but a Lazer branded version wouldn’t fit. Ended up borrowing a genuine ducati one.
You can then rattle gun the nut off and torque it back up safely.

  4. Depends on the model.

Single-phase bikes; 916 & early 748 have a different flywheel to 3 phase; 996 etc. but, as above Mike Shannon makes them.

I've got one of his single phase tools (works on both my 916 & Monster), does the job perfectly and is easy to use.:upyeah:

  5. Thanks folks, I went for one of the Laser flywheel one at £40.75, the tool corresponds to the one specified in my parts books for MY00 - 02 748s(88713.2036 - which has been superceded) and which is the same for 749, 998 and 999 bikes. Ended up getting another couple of specialist tools to take advantage of free postage.
