Polycarbonate Helmets?

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by carson, May 8, 2019.

  1. How old is that video ? To my knowledge, Shoei haven’t made a fibreglass helmet in years. Materials and manufacturing technology moves on at a pace. Get out there and ride your bike mate :upyeah: Andy

  3. Just as a follow on from arq's post. There was a chap in here collecting old crash helmets to pass onto the emergency services to help with how to deal with incidents of motorcycle/pillion accidents

    Found it, it was Sam

  4. I’ve got a Nitro helmet from when I was young and stupid...ok more stupid. It’s like having a plastic bucket on your head and it’s ACU gold certified. I’d never where any Nitro helmet.

  5. My minds been put at rest, I’ll be keeping the helmet and suing it without any issues

  6. As the ACU get paid for their stickers I don't think they're too picky about what it goes on.

  9. Are you saying they’re not bothered about liability?

  10. My serious response would be, fit, followed by weight... Kinetic energy (cant remember much about physics but think this is right) should be considered, meaning stored energy due to weight...so a 2kg helmet against a hypothetical 1.4kg helmet with the same rating, 1.4kg will have less stored energy in an impact at the same speed.

  11. Agree with above^^^^^^.
Extra weight will increase the chance of a neck fracture.

  12. Ye, p=mv, which is why I never balance a pallet of bricks on my head whilst motorcycling

  13. That certainly used to be the case. When I rode at Silverstone in(I think it was '84) the Marlborough Clubman's final you could take your non ACU stickered helmet and they would give it a 20 second visual inspection for any obvious damage and if it appeared ok they gave you a sticker. What was even worse they just "gave" it to you and you the went away, peeled the backing off and put it on whatever you wanted to.

  14. Some arsehole on the Beemer forum seems to think that the amount I should be spending on a helmet has something to do with what bikes I currently own or intend to buy.

  15. Pah, them beggers think indicators are an expensive optional extra

  16. Well! Yeah!!!!

  17. I’d like to see the ACU’s testing labs

  19. When I was racing, the ACU required the gold sticker whole and not dog-eared where it may have been peeled off another helmet.
The scrutineers also used to examine the helmet thoroughly - if the paint was slightly scratched it was OK, but any scratch that was deeper than the paint, they wouldn't let you use it.
If it was deemed satisfactory, they would apply a gold coloured self-adhesive paper type label which stated it was OK and which included the race date.
If it was a weekend meeting, you ended up with two labels.....and they were sods to remove.

  20. sorry to be pedantic but KE = 1/2M V squared
