2003 999s servicing

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by psalliss, Mar 18, 2013.

  1. Hi guys I've got a 2003 999s with 3400 miles on it and it could do with a service shortly. As the milage suggests it is only used in decent weather as I have another bike for all year round. I bought the bike approx aug 2011 with fsh and was serviced at the time of buying. I have done approx 300 miles on it but have had no work done apart from cam belts changed 7 months ago. My question is how much and what service do I need to get done or with the miles on it is it worth just getting specific things done in the service I.e oil change ect. Thanks

  2. Oil and filter. Very easy, do it yourself if you have a paddock stand.

  3. thanks mate bike is on an abba stand anyway. So you think just oil snd oil filter change and that's it. What about plugs, air filter valve clearance ect

  4. So since 2011 its done 300 miles?

  5. About 350 but yes it has only goes out in nice weather my other bikes are the all year ones

  6. Ducati's do not like not being used. Anyway I would not worry about valve clearances or plugs, maybe new oil but if it was me Id use it this year stick some proper miles on it and service it next year.

  7. ok mate thanks very much. im looking at selling it i think either end of this year or next hence the looking at getting it a good service. i know i ride all year round but it just feels wrong to use it in anything but sunny weather when i dont need to due to the miles. its sat on an abba stand on a battery charge when not being used.

  8. When mine is stood over winter, once a week I rotate the engine via the back wheel so that the belts are not in the same position for long periods. Unless your going on a decent run dont fire it up as this can cause condensation to build up, even more so when its cold outside.

  9. I'd do the oil and filter as already mentioned but also a fuel filter as well. Worth pulling the air filters and giving them a clean, if only to check them and get any mouldy flies that might be in there.
Also put fresh brake and clutch fluid in and unless you know when it was done, be worth dropping the coolant and filling with fresh

  10. Ok s

  11. Ok so basically drop all fluid plus new fuel and oil filter and general check over should suffice. How much about £300 for an independent?

  12. Less than £100 if you know how to hold a spanner

  13. I don't think mechanics offer a discount if you hold the spanner for them when they service your bike.

And it's not just holding a spanner - there's what size of spanner, where to apply it, where not to apply it, which direction to turn it in, etc.
People tend to overlook these issues when giving advice.

If in doubt, trust Nelly's advice. Or get it done by a professional, or someone knows what to do - it's an expensive thing on which to learn how to service a bike!

  14. Easy. You could have that "officially" for about £250 ;)

  16. My local independant is doing a service for £150 INC VAT at the moment if you are anywhere near Bristol/Bath.

  17. Thanks mate but I'm in Lancaster so quite a way away
