Oil advice & recommendations from oilman @ Opie Oils

Discussion in 'Opie Oils' started by oilman, Apr 11, 2012.

  1. If you would like any oil advice or a recommendation for your bike please feel free to ask here and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

To help us to give the most accurate advice possible we do need some information about your bike. e.g.
    Make:
    Model:
    Year:
    Engine type:
    Performance modifications:
Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc)
Any other information that may be relevant: e.g. oil temps if known
What recommendation are you looking for? Engine, Gearbox, Fork Oil etc.

Any oil we recommend is available to buy from us (if you would like to) for delivery throughout the UK and many destinations in Europe. We stock oils & lubricants from 10 major oil brands: Amsoil, Castrol, Fuchs, Gulf, Millers, Mobil, Motul, Redline, Valvoline and Silkolene, so we can supply fluids meeting the vast majority of manufacturer and international specifications.

Finally, if there are any products we don't stock and you have difficulty getting hold of elsewhere, let us know and we'll see if we can stock them.

We look forward to being of help!

    Cheers
    Guy, Opie Oils

  2. Hi Oilman,

I have a 2016 DVT Multistrada 1200S, which has Motul 300V 15W50 Ester Core fully synthetic oil as serviced by my dealer. It needs a top up, so I've purchased some more. I use the bike only on the road and it has a Termi end can as the only 'performance upgrade'.

But - I also have a litre of Motul 300V 5W40 Double Ester fully synthetic oil, which has never been opened but is about 5 years old (I bought it for a previous bike but never used it).

Can I use the 5W40 to top up the 15W50 in my bike to save me buying more oil in the future?

  3. Hi, I have a 2016 Multi 1200 S, used for spirited road riding, what oil would you recommend.

    TIA

  4. Please give me @oilman you're best description of what crude oil is actually made from?

  5. GSXR 750 K8. Purely for track use. I've read full-syn can cause clutch slip and semi-syn recommend by Suzuki but should I use full-syn as its on track?

I've also heard you shouldn't mix semi and full syn but how do you swap from one to another without a full engine strip as you always have oil left behind when doing a change?

  6. Hi

You need a 15w-50 oil and our selection is below

    https://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-784-15w-50.aspx

The Silkolene Pro 4 and Motul 300V are two of the best oils on the market, but the Motul 5100, Silkolene Comp, Castrol Power 1, Shell Advance and Mobil Racing are also good choices.

    Cheers

  7. Hi

Dinosaurs, plankton, plants, animals, pressure and heat. I like to tell my 4 year old I sell dead dinosaurs.

This is probably a better definition of what it is.

  8. Hi

Unfortunately, you've heard a few of the oil myths.

A full synthetic bike oil should not cause clutch slip, the level of friction modifiers in the oil should prevent the clutch from slipping, unless the clutch is badly worn, then the natural slipperyness of a good synthetic oil can allow it to slip. Make sure the oil is listed as JASO MA or MA2 as they will mean that it's made for wet clutches. A mineral oil is less slippery, so you don't necessarily need to pick a JASO MA/MA2 oil to avoid slipping, but it's also not as good at protecting and will not last as long, especially on track.

As for mixing synthetic and semi, it's absolutely fine. Putting it basically, the semi is a mix of mineral oil and synthetic oil, so mixing it with a synthetic is just upping the synthetic content. A lot of synthetics contain some mineral oil anyway, what it a synthetic and what is a semi can be a pretty grey area.

A lot of the oil myths are due to people using the wrong oil, out of date information or doing something daft, but rather than admitting their mistake, they blame the product.

    I would use a 10w-40.

The best oils there are the Silkolene Pro 4, Motul 300v, Red Line, Shell Advance Ultra 4 and Castrol Power 1 Racing. The Motul 7100 and 5100, Castrol Power 1, Millers ZSS, Shell Advance VSX and Silkolene Comp 4 and Super 4 are good cheaper alternatives.

    Cheers

  9. So, if crude oil is dead dinosaurs .... and we use oil in the production of plastics ..... does that mean that a plastic dinosaur is actually made from real dinosaurs ??? :D

  12. Hi Mr. Oilman,

What oil would you recommend for use in the engine and gearbox of a 1975 Yamaha RD250 please? It's standard (as far as I know!!) and uses the 2 stroke tank / pump rather than pre-mix. It's used purely on the road, and is about due a good service.
    Thanks in advance!
