748 Bought A 748 Rescue Dog..advice Sought..

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Skye Hook, May 22, 2019.

  1. So i was on ebay too late one night and one thing led to another..put a stupidly low bid in on a 16k 2002 748e and blow me down..won it.
needless to say i was not expecting miracles, but she ran from Glasgow to Skye and then i had a chance to take a look over. Oh Dear..someone clearly didnt give a lot of love to this girl, only covered 1200 miles in 8 years, left oustide by the look of the fasteners, low side at some point and mis matched coloured fairings etc,dry chain,a bit shabby.
to my main points, no visible coolant, a well dodgy story about a cam belt change 100 miles ago and no receipts for that and a very 'wobbly' rear sprocket.
I am thinking that the rear cush drives in the sprocket are knackered,i can wiggle it from side to side by hand, is this at all normal? is there a certain amount of give in these or is this priority level stuff? I have already spent £250 on a box of bits and bobs, oil, filters, grips, paddocks stands, manual etc etc, trying to prioritise things here.
going for the collant top up,then oil check and change if needed, then bleeding all brake/clutch lines (Black clutch res) Temp guage does not work at all,low fuel light on all the time. As i say, a rescue dog, mercifully lifted out of the clutches of someone who clearly had too many toys and no time for any of them,sheesh,16k miles should be pristine not neglected like this. The money was still well spent, after around 50 miles of sweating and lurching i got the hang of her and what a joy to throw around, looking forward to many miles and a long lasting love/hate affair with this one.

So,any advice on that sprocket issue? and also,is it normal to think the forks are bottoming out over City lumps and bumps? some clanking from that department too..oh dear ;)

  5. Sounds like an awesome little project. I’d love something like this.

Always good to see the improvements when there’s so much that’s not right

  6. Agree with Tel above, continue this thread please as you bring her back up to scratch. With photos. Keep us posted pls :):upyeah:

ps. Fit new belts ASAP. Change the oil & filter, don’t just check it’s level & colour. Flush the rad & system, refill with new coolant. Remove rear wheel & sprocket & check cush drives, there’s no ‘give’ in them. Change brake & clutch fluids.

  7. Buy a Renthal quick change sprocket carrier and new cush's, along with new chain and sprocket.

  8. thanks for all the enthusiasm, yes, its all do-able i reckon. Belts change 200 miles back is legit, but that was 18 months ago,do you change due to age or mileage? surely kevlar doesn't rot away in 3 years or so? manual should arrive today, then its tank off, coolant and fluids change and a quick thrashing around the Island before i dive into that wobbly sprocket area,i shall take some pics as we progress,it aint going to be a show tart but i will do my best to clean everything up for now and give her a new set of Knickers.

  10. If it was me:
    new belts
    new plugs
    new brake/clutch fluid
    new oil/filter
    new fuel filter
inspect and consider new air filters
    coolant flush and new coolant
new chain and sprockets with cush drives (14T front https://www.gearingcommander.com/)
    clean brake calipers and bobbins

if she has any starting issues, new battery then starter cables from Blossom if the new battery does not fix.

How old are the tyres? I'd swap if over 4 years old and you may have flat spots if it's been sat.

Once you've done that lot you can ride about for the summer and make sure the engine is sound before spending on resprays, etc.

  11. Low fuel light works by a tiny pin hole in the fuel level sensor. Sometimes it get blocked by a bit of crap in the fuel so you can remove it and blow through the hole with an air line (can of compressed gas if you don't have a compressor). Mine used to be on all the time for the first 500mls or so, then became intermittent for 500mls now fine for last few thousand.

I'd hold off spending £100 on a new one till you've done some miles and tried to blow the hole clear. I just used to fill up every 100mls.

  12. You can whip the top belt covers off and visually check they look in good condition and also check tension (@Exige can give you new and used frequencies for reference of Ducati and Exactfit belts), recommended 2 years or 12,000 miles - you won't go wrong, but plenty of low use bikes that aren't used to the limits are left for longer.

Good luck with sorting it :upyeah:

  14. Thank you! one other thing, there are termis on the bike, can you fit your own chip for these or is it a dealership job? i have the receipt for them as £400,so i guess its just end cans and not the full system?
and there is a wisp of smoke if i start her up and shut down after a little throttle, not much but i guess this is OK? paranoia dictates a soft approach with a large stick..

  15. Call Rich at Luigi Moto in Bristol and he can post a chip out that matches the bike/exhaust setup. He did for my 996 after I fitted 50mm Termi's and it stopped at the over fueling when rolling off the throttle.

  17. thanks Keith, what do i need to take off and where do i stuff this chip?

  18. heres my saturday sorted.wrong nuts in the fairing lower, rusted to molegrip condition, old coolant maybe 2 litres max, cloudy.this takes 3.5 litres right?
flushing the system now and running the flush through, time to fill her back up with colland and see if there is pressure in the system, softly softly catchy Monkey..
