  1. I know the feeling, I did exactly the same this Winter and it made no difference. :(
A nice new cable kit from @Exige did though :)
I had managed to get my bike running, with a lot of help from Derek and Chrisw, but it still wasn’t starting well. A new battery didn’t help but the cable kit certainly did.

  3. Hi it’ll be the starter motor brushes, you can get them from electrux world or you can go the whole hog and get a replacement starter from the same place
If you go for the brush kit you may find it rather fiddly to fit
Either way you have to remove the nearside engine case to access the third bolt on the starter
Give the starter a sharp but light knock with a hammer at the end where the starter cable attaches and you may well get a few more starts out the worn brushes

  4. Does anyone have a guide to removing the starter motor?

  5. Hi jack the starter is reasonably straightforward to remove. first disconnect or remove your battery then disconnect starter power cable, you will have to ensure that the mounting post does not spin as you do this, there is a spanner flat point under the cable but you will need a narrow spanner, I made up a simple holder from some flat steel plate, hold the post still as you remove the nut
You are then able to remove the three mounting bolts but the third one is under the nearside engine case!!!
To remove the engine case remove ALL the Allen bolts, there are some under the sprocket cover and the clutch slave cylinder if yours is a dry clutch
Then you need to make up a simple puller to remove the cover as there’s an outrigger bearing in the case, it’s used on the crankshaft access plate, drain the oil before you get going though.
When the covers off you can rotate the engine to line up an access hole in the starter gear ring to get to the third bolt
Don’t worry as it sounds a lot more difficult than it is

  6. Before you start this strip down run a jump lead from your battery positive direct to the starter motor connection and if nothing happens then it’s definitely the starter, if its spins up it’s your solenoid breaking down under load

  7. If it is just the starter brushes you can do them without removing the starter motor.

  8. I assume the obvious normal faults have been checked - the small white connector is pushed onto the solenoid properly and the relay is OK?

  9. Take the spark plugs out to ease the load on the starter while you're testing (and switch off ignition).

I replaced the starter brushes on my 996 recently. Fiddly to reassemble and a lot easier with the motor on the bench. Easier to clean the copper contacts on the commutator too (v.fine emery paper and meths only). I also fitted an extra ground cable, straight to one of the long bolts holding the motor together. This has made a big difference to starting.

  10. Or £14/15 on ebay (e.g. item 160913702319 from thetoolacademy)

  11. I had same problem on my 1199 and it was starter relay.

  12. Yes, look at the simple stuff first

  13. yes I have checked that and the solenoid seems to be working all ok

  14. I have a spare battery which I connected straight to the starter motor and it didnt turn, I will have it stripped down today so I can have a better look

  15. Just take the end cover off so you can get at the brushes.

Easy enough to do without taking the starter off the bike.

Be careful with the battery lead mounting post.

  16. I did this on my ST4S, fiddly, but its a lot easier than taking of the side case to remove it.

  17. Took the motor apart to test it on the bench turned over, but extremely weak. Took apart and cleaned and the brushes are worn down to there holding case. I'm going to order the service kit from electrex and hope that solves it.

  19. Does anyone have a suggestion on what type of liquid gasket seal to use when re-fitting the alternator case?

  20. Threebond TB1215, or Permatex Ultragrey.
