  1. It’s really good turning a bike around from a bit of a shitter, to something you can be proud of!

They do need some proper looking after, but when you’re riding a well prepared bike, it can’t be beaten :)

  2. Under the seat you will see the ecu, it has a round bung on the top probably covered with a sticker or if it's been removed before, some gaffer tape, remove the bung and the chip is there, you may have the correct chip already in there, regarding your sprocket cush rubbers, it's not unusual to have a bit of side movement.

  3. The fairing fixing would be better replaced with dzus fasteners, when funds allow.

  4. oh,leaky fuel hose now, maybe time to buy them quick release fittings for the tank i guess? curiouser and curiouser. Hey..good news, the tempo guage does work after all, leaving it for ten minutes to circulate the flush it started to move a tiny bit towards 100.

  5. Cheap chip puller off eBay makes life simpler. Make sure the ignition is not on!!!!

hmmm,i dont have one of those! this is a 748E,is that the issue?

UNLESS that label needs peeling off first,is it a label??

and that coolant... it just does not want to fill,i have maybe got 2 litres in at most and it will not come up to the marks on the filler tank,it is like feeding medicine to a baby, one burp at a time and then some throwing up,took me at least 1/2 hour to get it to this level. maybe the pump is at issue now? although there was a hiss when i did the 10 minute flush through, maybe she needs a good run and a top up after that? 7. You can see the outline of the rubber cap through the sticker. Run a blade around the outside of the cap outline and it’ll pull out mate.

With the coolant, maybe it’s stat not opening?

  9. Do you have a Haynes manual? That should tell you how much it takes to fill. You may have a air bubble stuck. Rock the bike left to right lime you are getting your elbow down with the engine running.

  10. yeah
yep, there is air locked in there i reckon, the drain plug dribbles out and then a rush,so some air stuck in the system, trying to rev it out but that is not working, will try some side to side motion..dammit. other good news, oil is very clean, filter is very new looking.
and yeah,Haynes says 3.5 litres 50/50 coolant and distilled water

  11. that sounds a bit intimidating, what can i do about a stat not opening?.

also these dzus fiarings fasteners, do you need to buy a clip for them to lock into or do they suit the thread clips already on the bike?

  12. These are what you'll need. There are 10 on the bike; 4 on each side and 2 underneath

And the thermostats are a sealed unit, so just a matter of whipping the jubilee clips off and fitting a new one.

  13. When you fill it, you need to put it in slowly and at a steady rate and massage/squeeze the bottom hose whilst doing it.

  15. i must be doing it wrong,as none of my beautiful women seem to have a bottom hose, but times they are a -changing.

  16. many thanks Tel,perfect links,i will give it the beautiful woman approach as listed above and if that does not work swap that thermostat out!

  17. So the beautiful women approach allowed her to swallow another 100ml or so but no real joy, so i am sending off for a vacuum kit which should pull any air out and suck the coolant up the right way too. If that fails then possibly Stat, but symptoms would not suggest that.
On the Termi chip issue, here are some pics of the cans and exhaust, is this a complete system or just slip on cans? will it benefit from chipping? before i spend another lump of cash i would like to make sure it will benefit the Bike, she runs ok on idle but can cough to a standstill after a few minutes, also lots of throttle produces a series of small explosions at times, just one or two mainly.smoke recedes after a good warm up,but she does not seem to stay steady on idle for a long time, very agricultural.
and thank you all for your help so far, back in my old Bonneville days it was Haynes and phoning around bike shops, things are a lot easier with a shared pool of knowledge..gracias.

    so,chip needed or no?

  18. They look the same as mine 748 MY99 and it’s chipped. Easy enough to do as described above.

Get a Haynes manual if not done so already.

You shouldn’t have to get a vacuum kit to refill the coolant. At least I never had to. Fill up, run, top up an repeat until the level is correct. It’s just a bitch to get to the filler cap with the petrol tank on.

Re the leaking fuel. Do you not have QR fittings already? I’m not familiar with the details of the E version but I would have thought both E & S from that year have QR fuel line fittings. The leak is more likely to be a requirement for new O-rings.

Keep up the good work :upyeah:

  19. cheers Paul, no QR fittings on the 748E,the leak is just a worn hose, some small splits,if i turn the tank too far around it weeps a little,so i have ordered some hose and spring clips, hoping to make a cheapo version of quick release for under a fiver,we will see.

my concern about the coolant is getting hot spots if there is a big bubble in there, the vacuum kit was £23 and i already have a compressor so i reckon it should be a good bit of kit to have anyways,it sucks the air out and then automatically fills the tank using the created vacuum, foolproof unless there is a leak or pressure issue in the system.

Thanks for the chip advice,i shall give these Luigi folks a call and see what is needed, did you notice an improvement with your set up? mine is a bit sloppy off the throttle at the moment,it would be nice to smooth things out a little there.

Bled the brakes and clutch and cleaned up the pushrod, job looks good.fasteners ordered so things can pull apart a little quicker in future, but the beauty of this for me is that it takes me back to a bike i can work on again.the Multistrada is brilliant but there is only so far i can go before it becomes Wizardry and incomprehensible to mere mortals.

Pissing down all weekend here which has made it easier to be in the workshop, now just looking out for a splash of sunshine and dry for a little test run.

  20. I know the E version was a 'base' model but I'm surprised they tried to shave costs there, still, that's bean counters for you.
The coolant one is a weird one. I have to admit I never actually measured how much coolant I put in when changing it, just do it until it's at the right level. As a matter of academic interest my 748 is currently in pieces undergoing a complete strip down and refurbishment, and therefore completely dry so I shall measure what is required when I come to refill it. Howvever, I found this which seems to support your 2 litre(ish) observation.

I can't say I noticed a change pre and post chip as I bought the bike new and had the dealer fit the Termis and chip it, giving me the original exhausts and original EPROM chip separately. However, the term 'slip ons' is perhaps a misnomer on these bikes (although I stand to be corrected :)). On mine, the CF exhaust system links into the original exhaust at the join where the spring is, just behind the heel guard, in your photo. I'm assuming your's does the same? The standard exhaust on my MY99 748 is 45mm. I'm guessing yours is the same? The exhaust is a 'straight through' system there are no baffles or catalytic converters between the exhaust valves and the silencers, hence 'slip on' doesn't quite describe them. What you have done is to replace the original silencers, with their sound deadening and thus back pressure increasing baffles, with something that is more free flowing. Hence the EPROM chip needs to be changed as the fueling will be out if the original EPROM chip is retained.

Some people will either fit 50mm Termi silencers with a reducing section 50mm to 45mm, or will fit a complete 50mm system i.e replace the pipes from exhaust valves to silencers. However, whilst this sounds great 'I've got 50mm Termis on my bike', ergo, being bigger they must be better, in reality, unless you make changes to the air intake system and heads and replace the throttle bodies with larger ones and possibly even increase the valve inlet and outlet sizes, or at least have the heads gas flowed, there will be no increase in power, and maybe even a drop in power; so I've been informed by a good authority:).

Check your ECU before spending any money. If it looks like this i.e. with 2 stickers on it, or if it's been cut in anyway as described above there is a good chance the correct chip has been installed already.

These bikes are so easy to work on, everything is accessible and as your say there's no electronic wizardry. I much prefer working on my 748 to my '09 Monster 1100S, it's so quick and easy to get to everything.

    :upyeah:
