748 Timing Belts

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Gary Warren, Jun 4, 2019.

  1. Hi all. I'm about to service my 98' 748 including belt change. Just wondered if ccw is the way to go as I've seen (Gates) do a belt , has anyone used this make and are they any good? Is it best to stick with original Champion plugs or is there a better modern item . Thanks in advance.Gary

  2. IMO, NGK plugs are much better than Champion.

I don't use anything else in any engine, not even in my old Champion mower.;)

  4. Yes, NGK plugs and ExactFit CCW belts, plus you get a forum discount on the belts if you’re a subscriber, making them not only better than oem but cheaper too :)

  6. Has anyone renewed their crank sensor? Dealer price is a joke. Draining the coolant to access it, is it tricky after that with shims etc?

  7. Cheers Old rider

  8. NGK Iridium & ExactFit belts:upyeah:
It’s fiddly but IIRC you should be able to get to the crank sensor without draining the coolant and removing hoses. However, even if you have to it’s no big job to drain, move what you need moved, reinstall and refill.

  12. Would anyone know about air gap needed and shims regarding crank sensor?

  13. Crank sensor is same as many Fiat ones. I have spec but not at computer right now. It can be changed without draining the coolant but access isn't great. Gap should be 0.7 mm + or - 0.2mm. (check with the engine at the timing position)
Check the length of the replacement and if it's the same use the same shim, if not shim accordingly.

  14. Thanks Derek.

  15. According to advice given to me, just check the two against each other, if close to identical, just use the existing shim.
CPS is 25 Squids on ebay

  16. That's lucky.
    Drain coolant with a Testastretta
