Hire Bike Question

Discussion in 'Insurance - Sponsored by Ducati Insurance' started by daimatt, Jun 5, 2019.

  1. Hi all,

I have been hit by a car on my bike and he's admitted liability and my bike is off to be repaired. So that part is all sorted. However I have a bike trip in to Europe planned for the end of June with everything all booked and it's not something I'm willing to cancel.
I have explained all if this to both the third party and my insurers so they both know I have this trip planned and the accident is likely to prevent me taking my bike :(
I know that I don't currently need a hire bike as I have a car and so have not asked for one but speaking to the repair company they think it's likely to be 6-8 weeks for my bike to be repaired. As above they know I want a bike for my trip and I don't want to be liable for it.
How far in advance can I safely request a hire bike to ensure I'm used to it for the trip and have a strong argument for the hire bike?
I leave on a Thursday, so would asking for it for the Saturday before be ok?

On another note, the bike is rideable. Can I ask for it back and return it when they have the parts in to repair it?

  2. I'd have thought you wouldn't want to be riding your damaged bike in case any further harm comes to it whilst away. Gives insurers/repairers excuse to squirm out of obligations.

  3. Are you sure that a hire company will allow you to take a uk bike abroad? And cover possibly several thousand miles?

  4. Where are you headed on your trip? We go to Spain, Portsmouth to Bilbao at the end of June.

  5. France, Belgium and Germany. I'm aware that it's abroad and long distance and that's part of the question, obviously from my point of view the third party not paying attention shouldn't leave me worse off and I don't want to cancel this holiday so feel it's right for me to have a bike for this trip. But that's my biased view so wouldn't mind a more impartial (perhaps legal) look at it.

I did think they wouldn't let me have my bike back for those reasons, but worth a punt.

  6. What have your insurance company said? I don't think they can expect you to cancel any plans you had/have regarding your transport, check your policy regarding replacement transport. If all else fails then you still have the Insurance ombudsman to take up your case.

  7. I've rented in the past from Bournemouth Motorcycle Hire and Black Bear Harley for overseas trips with no problem. Riders said they would too, though I never took them up on it.

  8. If your with Carole Nash they will provide a bike while yours is being repaired usually the bike's they provide are not the best
They also let me take the bike to France

  9. Who is doing the repairs to the bike? If its a dealership then couldn't they loan you a bike and forward the charges to the insurance company?

  10. It's the insurance approved place, 4th Dimension in Egham. I'll give them a call on the 20th so it gives me time on the bike before the trip if they are happy for me to have one or time to sort something else out if they get funny over the Europe bit. Just annoying as the bike only needs a rear set and some paint on the fairing but as it's insurance it's taking ages :(

  11. Read this. Some potential feedback about 4th dimension. I have no personal experience.
