1200 DVT Ignition Turned Off At 70mph

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Thomas Blum, Jun 5, 2019.

  1. So I drove home from central London last night when suddenly the ignition completely turned off out of nowhere. First at picadilly circus, then in blackwell tunnel, then several more times on a motorway!

Of course all lights turned off and no power which isn't fun on a motorway at night. She also wouldnt quickly turn back on (unresponsive). Doesn't seem to be mechanical as engine seems fine. Battery is also fully charged and I ride the bike daily. I also tried manual override in case battery in fob is empty but didn't help.

Going to dealer tomorrow but curious if anyone has experienced something similar? It's a 2016 DVT. Worried the electronics got messed up and it'll be very expensive to fix...

  2. I had what sounds like a very similar issue on the 899 and it turned out to be the elock relay that had fried itself. Have you added anything electrical to it recently ?

I'm told that some of the early relays were replaced due to some issues, (but this was specifically about the 899).

    RBW.

  3. I had similar issues in France a few years ago, never got to the bottom of it but I disconnected a tank bag power source I'd added a few weeks earlier and we removed the main fuse. This seemed to fix the issue. When I was in France and when I got back I had it plugged in for diagnositic at the dealer but there was no fault recorded.

  4. Battery terminals or relay methinks. Nothing else I can think of would be intermittent aside from obscure ecu things which are unlikely.

  5. cut out switch intermittent malfunction ?

  6. Thank you for all the suggestions gents. I'll relay to the dealer and let you know what they said. I haven't changed or done anything to the bike. Hopefully get to the bottom of it...

  7. I've heard the v4 can throw an ecu fit. Apparently disconnecting the battery for 24 hours does the trick. Maybe the same can help you.

  8. Bad news. Apparently the hands free unit has failed. They tried to "flush" it and update the software but it was not responding and froze. Costs 500 quid to replace :astonished:

The bike is in perfect condition otherwise with 11k miles and full service history so they will see if Ducati will send the part as goodwill but not having high hopes.

  9. If you have a FSH with your dealer then I've found Ducati to be pretty reasonable about at least supplying the part.
    How old is the bike?

  10. this isnt uncommon with earlier CAN systems. some ECU's freek out with the amount of info they had to deal with and start throwing up oddball faults. and yip, disconnect and reconect after a period gennerally sorts em out

  11. Hi my 1260 Multi cut out ( low speed) once so far & dealer found no error code. I will now check the battery conections when next in the garage.

  12. Don’t forget to check the earth connection too

  13. My 1200dvt had it's hands free unit and keys replaced, paid by Ducati 14 months after the warranty was finished. There are issues with these parts and Ducati knows about it

  16. I happened to come from the Alps, the connector under the pilot's seat on the right, which was blank, call the workshop, they told me to tighten as I could the terminals and when I returned I would change the connector for a new one, the old one was white and fragile the new one is thicker black and covered by a transparent plastic bell, look at this, mine is also from 2016, and there were a lot of connectors to change

  18. Sadly it's not the case, we've had two of these give up with electrical problems on the EMM in the past. One of our group (Peter) managed to fix one, but the other one died in the middle of France and had to be recovered...

  19. Fingers crossed. She's from 2016...
