Technical car question

  1. Wasnt sure where to put this so apologies if in wrong place
Given the tech knowledge on here thought i would see if you can help
I have a 2002 VW Polo and it has a weird problem
Drives 100% at all low speeds irrespective if under load or not
However once I am up to higher speeds and the car is loaded eg with people or due to a hill it judders - not a lot but enough for it be annoying - this passes if I ease off the throttle and gets worse if i give it full gas
It feels like unbalanced wheels but cant see why it would do this
Had them checked anyway and they were fine
Also thought might be ignition coils - they were a bit dodgy so replaced them and the plugs - still does it
I was thinking maybe clutch but it doesnt seem to slip anywhere
Not sure if these have a dual mass flywheel and whether that could be the culprit?

  2. Sounds like Dual mass Flywheel syndrome, is it diesel or petrol please? Also do you think it is drivetrain shudder or engine? Have you checked the obvious like engine and gearbox mountings?:upyeah:

  3. If it feels like a misfire and with wider throttle opening/higher revs, could be fuel filter?

  4. petrol
mountings not obviously dodgy but will double check
fuel filter - guess could be but doesnt feel like fuel starvation more like a 'wobble' under load!

  5. Fair dues.... is it "load" as in engine under load, or "load" as in weight being carried...
As Peter mentioned, you need to try and pin it down to chassis or motor then. If its a chassis thing carrying a fair weight, then it could be a bearing, a spring or mount, wishbone......

  6. my girlfriend has a 1.6 petrol beetle.
it also started with driving bad in 3the gear when see was accelerating.
it got worse and it was the real bad when you where driving with cruise control.
it was driving like it has a bad sparkplug.
we had it hooked up on the VW diagnose computer but there was nothing to bee seen.
we also changed the "luchtmassa meter" don't know how it is called in english:air dense meter or so???
    but that stayed the same.
at the end sombody told me to put some stuff in the tank to clean the injectors, that it could be coased from that.
a injector that not make a good spray anymore.
i did this twice and about 50km later the car drove good and does still.
maybe worth to try as well.

    henk!!!

  7. As Henk also said checking all the obvious sensors and making sure the car is serviced with clean filters and good ignition system is the place to start, then you can iliminate from there.

  8. I have had the same sort of thing on a Mk1 Golf GTi and a Mk4 Polo 1.6... Both times it turned out to be the fuel filter ( the pressure filter on the supply side of the injection system ). Easy quick fix is to remove the filter, blow all the fuel out of it in the reverse direction to the normal flow, and refit it. You will probably see a dark brown rusty mess come out of it. Long term fix, new filter. Usually caused by water in the fuel tank. Unfortunately likely to become a far more frequent problem as the ethanol level in fuel is increased... More likely if the car does not get much use, as there is more chance of the ethanol dragging water into the fuel...

  9. Hmmm somay be fuel side! Ok will have a look this weekend and see
    Thanks

  10. Its a easy fix. Avoid Hills, motorways and dual carriageways and don't give anyone a lift.

  11. Could be a dicky driveshaft?

  12. Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Fuel filter first and work from there.

  13. My astra was like that when the head gasket was on it's way out :-/
The hotter it got the slower it went up hill
M5 north up hill Bristol used to be interesting up the crawler lane :-s

  14. Thanks - will venture into the cold this weekend and do one of two things -

    1. look at the fuel filter etc and see if that sorts it
    2. use it as an excuse to go buy a new car lol

  15. No 2 sounds a bloody good idea
    Easter treat :)

  16. Or 3- Buy a new bike instead.

  17. I did re the bike in November lol - bought a 1198s and ist been out to play just once! Ended up lobbing loads of cash at it in upgrades lol - roll on summer !

Car wise trying to convince my wife that if I take her beemer estate as my run around bike carrying car and chop in my polo I can then buy her a Alfa Brera V6 Q4 - its practical lol

Up side is she is away for a few days so might just get on with it lol
