M900 Fuel Pipes Source

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Mark9, Jul 12, 2019.

  1. 42EDD39A-744A-49EA-8140-C69199ED4C24.jpeg just went to change the fuel filter on my 1996 M900, unfortunately the fuel pipe split, I’m guessing it was the original from 1996 and was finished off by ethanol, it’s the one from the tank to the filter, I need to replace all of them of course , are these still available from Ducati does anyone know?, (I rang Cornerspeed but they are on holiday), photo of split pipe shows it had completely gone, just glad it didn’t happen during a ride.

  2. Hi Chris, I was thinking it’d be better to use those supplied by Ducati due to the preformed bends, that said they could be old stock with less resistance to ethanol I guess, have you done this job on your Monster, was it easy enough to route without the preformed bends?

  3. Take a closer look at them: some of them change diameter from one end to the other, also there are some pretty tight bends to get to the fuel pump.
They are (Were) available from Ducati, but are quite pricey for the specials.

I get round the ethanol problem by sticking to Esso Super Unleaded.

  4. you are totally right of course, I was suspecting it was that tube but you don't show the curve as broken at that point I guess. I think you will struggle to find an aftermarket that suits but i hope someone posts to prove me wrong. Looking at the break, not that I can see it that well, but are you sure it was perished? I remember when replacing filter on yours that hose can snag on lifting/closing tank unless positioned "just so".

  5. Yes definitely perished, it crumbles if you scrape it with your fingernail, I dodged a bullet here, if it had happened when riding it could have resulted in a fire, I’d better do my 900ss whilst I’m at it, no doubt the pipes on that will be circa 1991 :), I’ll get some pipe tomorrow and see how flexible it is and if I can work out a sensible routing, failing that hopefully Ducati still supply them, I’ll give Ducati Nottingham a call tomorrow as well, Cheers.

  6. Mark, we are indeed on holiday but take a look at some ethanol ready pipe. The old stuff doesn’t like it and I’m not aware it’s been upgraded with a superseded part. We’ve replace a lot lately and whilst it’s nice, it’s not essential to have the preformed stuff. Demon tweaks do the E10 pipe for not a lot, even rated a submersible so will last a while. Any decent auto factor should carry Ethanol safe pipe nowadays.

  7. Thanks Neil, I’ll use straight pipe then , thanks for interrupting your holiday!, you can have an extra day off for that :)

  8. You’ll still need to work out what you do where the bore changes?

  9. I know what you're talking about now Mark, I ended up using an internal diameter that was tight on the smaller dia end so it didn't end up loose and "bunched" on the larger dia end. One good reason for going to a specialist with a large choice but as Neil says, hopefully a wider range of sizes and types are more commonly available now.

  10. I haven’t had chance to take anything off yet so I’m not sure which pipe has the different dia ends, is it the one that has gone on my bike, tank to filter?, so are we talking one end is 6mm and the other 8mm?

  11. yes, pretty certain that's the one and i think you have diameters about right. I'm not in a position to check at the moment and memory rusty but Darkness could probably confirm.
That fuel filter used to be identical to that which Halfords used to stock as one of two non-descript, general filters and the price used to be around a third of the Ducati price. I don't think that's the case now or whether they still stock it.

  12. Ok, thanks Chris (and all above) , shouldn’t be an issue getting 6mm to go to 8mm, dipping the end of the pipe in a cup of boiling water usually does the trick, I’ll get a couple of lengths of 6mm and 8mm tomorrow so I have a choice of which to use and see how it goes,(I was halfway through ordering that from Demontweeks earlier but when it came to the check out they wanted £7.50 postage, that’s just taking the piss so I didn’t bother), I’ll call in at racing lines derby in the morning they should have it, if not there’s a pirtek outlet on one of the industrial estates. Thanks again.

  13. I recently replaced the 2 in-tank hoses on my fuel pump assembly in my Morini which has the same assembly as a couple of Ducatis - after a two week wait to no avail for Ducati hoses, I got mine from Demon Tweaks for about £15 in total. I had phoned countless suppliers and no-one could help with submersible hose. Mine were 8mm both ends.

  14. Glad to see Demon Tweeks have improved, last two times I used them wasn't satisfactory, even had to resolve one via a complaint but was about 4 years ago.

  15. I got a bargain rear tyre 180 Rosso II for my 900ss from them a few weeks ago, £67, the 2 metres of pipe was £11 but I can’t stand it when companies then stick a stupid postal charge on to boost their profit so they can keep their pipes!, obviously I’ll eat my words if I can’t get any this morning:)

  16. I replaced the tank to filter tube with generic E10 fuel tube earlier and found a good routing , I’ll post some pics tomorrow, i also replaced the pump to carbs tube and also found a good routing for that, the OE pipe has a 90 degree bend at the carb union that takes the pipe across the front of the RH float bowl above the carb warmer unions , I couldn’t achieve that 90 degree bend with the pipe I was using of course so on mine the pipe now gently sweeps to the right slightly lower and goes under the carb warmer unions, no problem getting the bend into the fuel pump at the other end, I was about to do the remainder of the pipes but the magic garage fairy had run off with the rest of the tube I’d bought, god knows where its gone!, I’ll find it or maybe get OE for the filter to Petcock, I couldn’t believe how much cranking it took to start, in fact I even pulled the plugs at one point to check they were sparking, anyway the fuel finally pulled through and it’s running a treat.
