new battery and blooming bike still wont start

  1. So as long as I'm very careful with connecting the pack up to minimise sparking shouldn't be an issue. I'm hoping its nothing more than down to being sat for months and just being a pig to start like you say and once being used will be fine

  3. That didnt sound like the healthiest battery, did you try to boost.
how old is your old battery, can you charge it and put it back in to see if it cranks over better.

  4. old battery was pretty old i think and had to be jumped when i bought the bike. but its certainly an option. im thinking its the battery.

  5. Agree with Peter. Doesn't sound the healthiest battery.

Is the bike in the cold? Worth charging the battery up inside a warm house, and then trying to start the bike with a 'warm battery'.

Batteries ability to delivery full cranking power significantly reduces with colder temperatures!

  6. bike is in the garage but wouldnt say its that cold up here. im wondering if maybe the charger ive got it connected to isn't working right despite it being new. ive got another charger so may pop it on that for 24 hrs to see if it helps

  7. My first thought on that would be battery....or at least "power". Give all the the leads from battery to solenoid to starter a once over and make sure they're corrosion free and tight. Don't over tighten the starter connection.
Check the earth to the rear cylinder as well. LHS of bike.
Only other thing......sprag clutch could be on it's way..

  8. excuse my igonrance whats a sprag clutch and what does it do. also how much are they

  9. My 999 has just been behaving the same. Brand new (fully charged) battery and after two attempts to start, the battery was flat as a fart. I replaced the Injector/Coil relay (£1.90) as it was found to be corroded. I then ran a secondary earth cable from the -ve terminal of the battery to the earthing point on the left side of the engine. Pressed the starter, without even recharging the battery, and it fired into life. Left it off charge for 4 hours and tried again, fired into life.

  10. thanks mate from the advice that everyone is giving im thinking that its combinaton of some battery issue i.e. its not fully charging on the charger and corrosion around the earth cables. im just not mechanically adapt enough to resolve it i dont think.

anyone near lancaster want to come and fix it before i kick it lol???

  11. hmm think i may have stumbled onto something. my charger is a acumen titantium and just been reading about various complaints from other people who have experience similar issues. it appears that the acumen will only charge and maintain at 12.2 which from what ive read is only 50% charge.

  12. As Nelly and others have said above, it is most likely the connections probably earthing.

Quick fix / test for earthing probs: With battery connected up normally, connect a single jump lead to battery -ve and other end directly to any clean bare metal on engine. If it now starts normally or at least spins the engine noticably quicker, you now know an earthing prob is the culprit which needs sorting.

    hope this helps

  13. Nope still no joy. Think it's going to be left to garage to fix. Ordered a hicap cable kit as well which may help with starting issue

  14. Forgive me if Im repeating other suggestions however I had exactly the same problems your experiencing on my 999s. It took bloody ages finding the fault. Replaced alarm, battery x2 and wiring etc. It ended up being the sprag clutch which nelly has previously pointed out. Since replacement at £600 the bike has been perfect. The technician who carried out the repair showed me the old sprag clutch and also explained why they go. Apparently people actually hold the start button in when trying to start the bike when actually on the 999 you have to turn on ignition, wait for it to do its dash board thing, then press the start button and let go and let the bike try to start. If it doesnt then repeat. Since replacement mine starts first time every time.

  15. Thabks mate I'm hoping its not yhr sprag clutch, mine is an 03 and doesn't have same start feature o have to hold button down

  16. I think you have found your problem sir. Mine is an 03 too and I thought I had to hold the button in

  17. Hi mate not all 999 have that feature mine definately is just a normal push button start

  18. My apology bud. I thought they where all the same. I will keep my eye out for when you find out what is causing the problem.

  19. No apology needed mate there's a lot of contradicting info. In just going off the manual and the forum. Going to take battery off and try de spiking the alarm and then take battery to garage to test
