couple of questions relating to Crankshafts...

  1. Hi all,

I am in the process of changing a crankshaft for the first time, all is going swimmingly, but I have gotten stuck at removing the drivegear cog on the R/H/S. I've got the retaining nut off, but I can't get the cog off the crankshaft for love nor money... any hints?
Also, I noticed in my old crankshaft there is a number of 14mm holes drilled into it, why might they have been drilled in? as the replacement has no such holes.

    Many thanks.

  2. Hi the gear is on a taper as well as a woodruf key and ideally requires a 2 or three legged puller. The holes in the webs are balancing holes, when initially assembled with con rods and pistons. Also don't omit shimming your crank for main bearing preload.

  3. Ah, awesome, thanks guys for your advice / answers :) you pair always seem to know lol

  4. I've made it,........a pair with Steve R. :upyeah:

  5. The factory tool is easier to use (and less likely to slip) than a standard puller, here's an aftermarket version of the factory piece; Ducati Primary Gear Puller-Part No. 887132092 | eBay not cheap but you don't even want to ask the price of the factory part! Where are you located? I have a puller like the one above you could borrow but it's a heavy & bulky thing to be posting.

  6. I've just seen a Civil Partnership Ceremony just announced in the Coventry Telegraph..........It says 'all on the Ducati Forum are invited.....'

  7. While you have it apart check the oil gallery plugs and make sure they can't come out....

  8. Upon removing the old I found shards of the big end bearings everywhere along with a Chewed up controls bolt and the oil galley plug out of the crank.. New crank is fitted, just need new crank shims and we're away!
Anyone know if jhp or the like stock the shims?

  9. Have I missed something here? How can you have the crank fitted and now require shims? Or was it a trial fit? Also is this a new crank, if not the 3 gallery plugs should be removed to ensure cleanliness, then loctite them back in. JHP will have the crank shims.

  10. No, you didn't miss a thing! My fault, I should have said it is a trial fit.... I have loctite ready to go as soon as shims arrive, after the mess the last lot made, I'm risking nothing!
I must say, I've learned a lot about my bike doing this :)
Thanks for the tips as always!
