Seems the cold weathers bought on a lot of dead batteries What are you replacing them with? And why? What? Is a good battery?
I've replaced 2 so far this year (on two different bikes), just one more bike to go and I can see another battery hitting the graveyard of dead batteries.
I just bought a Yuasa for the 1098 £38 delivered Same as original one which has lasted 5 years Gets my vote
749/999 owners before you condemn the battery - consider 1. Poor earth. A secondary earthing lead from the -ve terminal to the earthing point on your engine . 2. Corroded Injector/Fuel Pump Relay. A very cheap part to replace 4 Pin 'Normally Open' contact MICRO Relay - 20A | eBay May actually cure things
Motobatt all the way. Better cranking capability , options re the poles (2 pos and 2 neg) longer life and they are yellow
I found this and wish I hadn't Shorai Motorcycle Battery vs. Ballistic Motorcycle Battery Comparison - webBikeWorld Jeez, how hard can it be choosing a sodding battery?? Must confess to wanting a lighter one but for the time being I think I'm going to stick with a good old lead-acid and have done with it. Things might be clearer in a couple of years time but right now? Not worth the risk IMHO
A good read greyman but sadly with not much learned over what I already know... I've taken on two LiPO batts as I want to test them over time so I can pass on to my customers what Ive learned and its based on real world use, at this time most will know the only gains are less weight and life of the batt, however they need an all new type of care and that includes the charger so again the cost goes up. Many mixed reports of this and that on charging but they do have special needs one being the chargers program's must monitor voltages carfully! For example not to exceed 15v on a charge cycle or the cells maybe damaged. I guess it's a case of try it and see if all the fuss is worth while, my two test bikes 848 and a Blade are both in need of new batts as the old ones are around 5 years old and cranking slower each year.. Let you know in a year or so how I get on... If you wish to know more I can post up what I think and even PM you details of where to buy etc or even do you a deal... http://www.shido-batteries.com/html/FAQ/index.html
Please Arthur, I'd be more than happy to hear your thoughts, tbh at this moment in time I really am unsure what is the right choice?
As said in your link/post mate 150+ year old tech is hard to beat and maybe LiPO has some time to go before its as solid but I do have a number of customers that run them and also people I know on other forums with no problems the price of HIGH spec race LiPO batts a year or two ago was over £250 so like all things they have dropped hugely tbh Id still budget for a quality charger like the Optimate B for example to give them the correct care. Im in now mate so will be testing them out from now on, also have some others in the pipeline too..
After mucho deliberation I've bitten the bullet and ordered a top-spec motobatt - suck it and see I guess.
The two people I know who have gone for these new batteries which are quite expensive, were both left at the side of the road with battery problems, one in the middle of London on a tunnel run, the other at the top of fish hill on a ride out - they are a lot lighter though
I've gone an pulled my own pants down for a Ballistic evo2, I went for the 12 cell battery rather than the 8 cell. cheapest I've found by a long shot, unless you know someone who's going to the states, in which case get them to buy it over there! However the 8 cell does weigh in at just under 800gm!
Yeah mate that was one reason I didn't go down the lightweight route, the other was the cost - naughty - stick with lead acid for a little longer yet and wait for the new stuff to catch up reliability wise. @ Sev - hope it works out - I wrestled like hell wanting the lightweight one but played safe in the end - supposedly!!
Mine seems all good so far and another's been tested on a 1098 with no probs so far, got the blades and 848 on new optimates now too.. fired up the 848 five or six times in a row at 4 deg no problem.. ordered another for a mate KTM300 today, when I save up some more dosh I will chuck another on my WR..
Im doing the same but this time i bought a matobatt charger as well they are cheep and they have a cut out so you do not over chage and dry the battery out ,look on e bay the charger cost only 20.00 so we will see how iy goes my last motobatt did well for 2years then died but this time i will keep it topped up with the new charger
Thanks John, well spotted, just ordered Motobatt 6V & 12V Motorcycle Battery Trickle Baby Boy Charger with Auto Cut Off | eBay
