Bike Security - Disc Lock Or Chain.

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by ResB1299, Aug 19, 2019.

  1. Was hoping to get to Cadwell yesterday on the bike but unfortunately didn't have any additional security on the bike other than the steering lock, so went in the car.

I kind of know what Chain/Padlock combination I wouild get but they weigh a tonne and probably not suited for portability, so probably best suited for extra security in the garage. So was thinking of a Disc Lock. Is it worth spending £135.00 on the Abus Granit Detecto 8008 for instance when going to such events on the bike.

Whilst there yesterday, there was a mix of both and some with no additional protection that I could see. I guess it's a case of you pays your money and makes your choice.

Any opinions on this at all as I was possibly planning a trip to Silverstone this weekend. Many thanks.

  2. Any security on a bike will slow thieves down. It won't stop people from picking your bike up and putting it in a van unless you can secure it to a post or structure.

  3. Got a Roadlok on mine, great bit of kit, have a look on here, quite a few people use them

  4. If it needs clearance between disc and rim then the heftier the disc lock the less chance it will fit between them.

  5. The only thing that will recover a bike is gps tracker. The rest can be dealt with fairly easily, though a Roadlok is highly recommended. Meaning the bike must be lifted from its spot!

  6. Roadlok, great bit of kit, you don't have to carry around with you a heavy lock and if you try to ride off with it on, your unlikely to do any damage. Disadvantage you can't secure the bike to anything like with a chain.

  7. Thanks for the replies. The Roadlok looks a good bit of kit to be fair so worth some thought. I suppose I'm looking for something that just isn't there. I'll go with some kind of disc lock of some description, the rest is down to luck I guess. :upyeah:

  8. My pennies worth I use a roadlok when I'm out and about it's not been tested yet but feel a bit better leaving my PP multi

  9. If they want it they'll have it, no matter what you've got on it.

  10. Disc locks are a waste of time in my opinion.

  11. Thanks for sharing..........

  12. I don’t know what else you’d like other than that haha

The weakness is pretty obvious. Any crims half savvy will just lift it in to a van, as they so commonly do.

Get a chain. Preferably a decent one

  13. If you have a single sided swing arm, I have found this ideal, https://www.oxfordproducts.com/motorcycle/brands/oxford/security/cable_locks/revolver_18m_silver/. I have 2 and stitch the Multistrada and Diavel together through the sssa. Big and heavy I know but I strap them to my pillion seat. Andy

  14. That’s just the same with a chain if you have nothing to fasten to. Neither a chain or disc lock is ideal in the situation I spoke of. i.e. at BSB OR MotoGP for example. At least a disc lock, particularly the Abus one is hard to remove and very portable. It’s unlikely anyone is going to sit with an angle grinder at the MotoGP for instance, they’re more likely to lift the bike and throw it in a van as you say and even that’s unlikely given the aforementioned location. If they do throw it in a van neither a chain or disc lock will stop them. However, insofar as chains are concerned, the Pagmasis or the Almax one seems to be the weapon of choice.

  15. Well yeah... that’s why you chain it to something

  16. Chain it to someone else's bike... there should be plenty there to choose from :D
Plus I'm sure they'd appreciate the extra security!
(unless they have to leave early...!)

Seriously though, I understand your concern, considering all the news about stolen bikes etc I hate taking my bike anywhere I can't see it now.

  17. Carrying that to the extreme, if you sell your bike you don't have to worry about it being stolen :worried:
The day I start worrying more about it being stolen rather than the enjoyment I get from riding it, is the day I pack in motorcycling.

  18. Let the air out of the tyres, carry a dick pump. Those things work, trust me, I'm considering a porn movie

  19. Disc locks are the work of the devil. How many times do you have to ride off with it still fitted before you start remembering you put it on?
