Registering An Imported 900ss - Trying To Determine Vin For Dvla

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by CLottyboo, Aug 16, 2019.

  1. Hi everybody,

New to the forums having just aquired a 1996 900ss - Only 7500 miles, original bar carbon cans, imported from Holland. Belts changed, valves checked and a new swing arm bearing installed, I am itching to ge out on the road, but I have a problem that I hope somebody can help me resolve.

Sent the V55 to DVLA, all good except they said the VIN I quoted was too long at 25 characters and they are looking for 17.

I have the Dutch registration papers which quote the frame number as the VIN so this is what I supplied to DVLA. They suggested I contact Ducati to confirm the VIN which I have done, but the Ducati customer services (Anna/Borgo Panigale Italy) told me they cannot help and my local dealer said their system only tracks bikes back to 2000.

    My frame number is ZDM906SC2020656DGM530530M
    Engine number is ZDM904A2C*030738*

Can anybody advise me as to a way forward??

    Thanks in advance.

  2. This appears to be the frame number: but it's odd as the last 6 are usually numbers and it's 15 long not 17 ZDM906SC2020656

I think USA bikes had 15 numbers and 17 for Europe.

What's it say on the head stock?

  3. Welcome aboard and goodluck with resolving matters with DVLA:upyeah:
pics please as this is one of my favourite motorbikes:thinkingface:

  4. Your frame number will be up to the DG, so ZDM906SC2020656.

That is the format for my 888 and the factory confirmed this to me in 2017, when I bought it.

  5. If you send a photo of the numbers on your headstock and the engine to [email protected], they should be able to confirm this with you. This is what they asked for in 2017, so hopefully they will do the same for you today.

Also, I believe the US bikes had 17 characters and we had 15 up until around 2000 (I may be wrong on the year)

  6. Checked on a couple of 900ss from that era and might have found some explanation to DVLA 17 digit request.
There are 17 characters but the 10th and 17th are stars, so normally they aren't noted as part of the number.
The DGM and what follows are the homologation numbers and not part of the individual bike identifier.
So, yours are likely to be as far as the dvla requested 17 numbers-
    ZDM906SC2*020656*

  7. Hi

Don't know if this will help, but I have a 1991 851 SP3. On the headstock, there are two numbers. The first one is 15 characters long, but as has been mentioned, contains two asterisks. Underneath this is a 10 character string beginning DGM. So taking your number as an example, it would appear thus:

    ZDM906SC2020656

    DGM530530M

There may be a couple of * to make up the 17 characters that DVLA are looking for? FWIW the V5C for my bike shows a 15-character VIN number!

    HTH.

Edit - like @Jon Wright said!

  8. FWIW my 99 748 has a 15 character VIN including the asterisks

    ZDM748S*010804*

It’s stamped on the headstock above the DGMcode.

I’d go with what @Jon Wright says above and submit in that format.

ps. When mine was registered they didn’t insist on 17 characters.

  9. Good luck with finding the solution and getting that lovely bike on the road
But please introduce yourself 1st if you haven't done it already we love pictures of your bikes and bins it's the forum law

  10. Thank you so much for all the information guys - I suspected the DG bit onwards was some kind of homologation code.

I will resubmit to DVLA but am a little worried that the genie is out of the bottle with them and they may query me resubmitting with an apparently shorter code, without any firm confirmation from the manufacturer.

The good news is that this delay will not keep me from taking it out on the Classic Bike Track day at Cadwell in mid September for a scratch around to see if I like it!!!!! (Also have a TRX850 so will be interested in the comparison

    ;-)

Once again - Thank you. Owners forums are terrific!!

Pics to follow shortly - Has a few chips and the odd marks but runs so sweet.

  11. BTW, my V5 for the 888 only has 6 numbers (the ones between the asterisks) as the vin/frame number. The DVLA obviously had no quality control in 1993.

  12. Welcome Dave

  13. Welcome to the forum Clottyboo. This info is most likely useless but my 1991 750SS has a sixteen character VIN on the headstock. The V5 for it uses the six digits between the stars of the VIN plus the DGM531540M homogolation code making a different sixteen character number. I guess this was done 28 years ago though.

  14. DGM numbers are ususally the homologation numbers, as said above.

  15. Well guys, just to finish the story off, Ducati Italy referred my query to the UK arm and I now have an email confirming the VIN/Manufacture date so that should keep DVLA happy - except the numbers quoted on the MOT dont match the VIN - Have posted it all off and keeping my fingers crossed as they had "ticked off" the MOT requirementpreviously.

Thanks again for your help and input everybody.

Anybody doing the classic track day at Cadwell in September??

  16. Welcome to the forum.

  17. Welcome, lovely bikes - enjoy
